So I can't get microphones to work on my computer and it makes me a sad panda. I'm not very good with technical stuff....so... I've tried several different kinds of microphones. I have like a little headset even, the sound will come through the headset but nothing happens when I try to speak through the microphone. And yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm plugging it into the right holes in the back of the computer. I could be wrong though.
Does anybody have any ideas? I know this is really vague, but uhm...yeah.

Your microphone is probably muted in the settings. Go to your control panel and click on sounds there should be a volume setting and a mute toggle in there.

on most sound cards the mic jack is pink... or red.
other than that... what are you using to determine that it isnt working?

Well, um. Sound Recorder.

No that's cool.. exactly what I would have suggested ;)
cause it is simple to use, and is an easy test ;)
also if you do unmute your mic (muting it in the options actually only stops the sounds form it from playing back in your speakers...)
you should be able to tap on it and hear it in your speakers if you have the mic volume up..
their may be a hardware boost in the advanced properties,
I would double check which jack you have it plugged into though...
if it isnt labeled get the information for the card (or motherboard if it is built in) and go from their...

I have the sucker plugged in now, pink to pink....black to green or whatever for the sound. Sound works fine, but nothing even happens for the microphone. Would for some reason my computer be missing recording software? Or...something?

Okay, thanks to the Sound Testing Wizard, I have deduced that my microphone does indeed work but I have no playback. AKA I can't hear anything I say into it. And that still doesn't make it work when I try it out on like, Sound Recorder.
EDIT: NO WAIT!!!!!!! holy crap! It just started working! Thanks for all your help guys. o____o I'm not exactly sure what happened...but um...it works now....so um...how about that voice chat thing?

Oh no... not the dreaded voice chat!
I love it for communications but I have found that some people stop paying attention to spatial so be careful with it. it can hurt your rp experiance, if you let it.
I am glad you got your headset working. Its nice to talk to the person behind the toon.
And if you are going to use voicechat, headsets are the way to go, that way you don't get feedback or background noise on the distant end.

Yes.. that happened in one of my old guilds. We all got on ventrillo and started ignoring everything that was text based. After a month, half of us stopped using it.
Oh.. and I hate it when people feel compelled to share their music over VC. I wanted to scream, "NO, I don't want to hear your stupid F-BOMB music, turn that S-BOMB off!!!"
