got up at 445am for the 615 departure I had to fly...did four more legs after that with little food...got onto the 339pm flight to Indy...sleep on more hour to bring my total to 5 or 6 hours...hop in the car to go to the Jimmy Buffet concert in Indy...get to the offramp and stopped so I change in the car while we are waiting...getting somewhat close to the parking lot and I notice my engine temp has risen to the normal hot limit..
think, no big deal, was running it fast and now I'm just sittin around...
then it climbs higher..."hmm it's never done that before"
then higher
then higher
then higher
getting near the red area
I shut it down since we haven't moved in 5 minutes and open the hood, and coolant is blowing up out of the top of the resevoir bottle...so I leave the hood cracked open for additional cooling cuz we are about to move again...
so now I'm moving slow, hood cracked, and white smoke is starting to pour out the hood since the coolant is splashing on the really hot engine...people pointing and laughing, making remarks...I get a security guy to get me into the parking lot early or the car is shutting down blocking all traffic...park it quick in the lot to see the temp OVER the red line of the gauge....more smoke....open hood and the coolant top had blown off the bottle and it was gushing out like a volcano....
well now I'm stuck for a few hours while it cools, might as well go to the concert...
so we go to the concert which was great and really fun...a JB concert is like a huge party and we had pavillion seats...but it was hard to REALLY enjoy the show when I had a broke down car in the lot and I was 2 hours from home...I hadn't eaten either so I paid $13 for 2 slices of pizza and a powerade...
anyway onto the highlights:
-seats were center esction at the last row, so we could see good, yet get out easily for whatever
-an enormous amount of chicks in bikinis (coconut variety too) and grass skirts (unfortunately many men dressed this way as well)
-a few free boobie shots (wife punched me)
-JB premiered some songs from next weeks new album at our concert, so that was pretty cool
-the jumbo screens not only showed the concert, but video collages to go with some songs ( like one new song he did as an homage to a friend of his that had recently died)
-rain threatened all night, but we just got a few drops
-some drunk chick grabbed my ass, lol
-a really LOUD show, that was surprising
-3 encores and ran about 2.5 to 3 hours
so then the march back to the car...I figured to wait until we were the LAST of the people out of the lot, so the car wouldn't overheat...
so we get there and the coolant bottle is dry, so I borrow some guys water from his cooler and fill it up, and then we sit down and wait
and wait
and wait
LOWLIGHT: some prick is hauling ass with his pickup and goes through a muddy area next to my car, spraying the car and myself with foul smelling mud
HIGHLIGHT: drunk chick stumbling, bumps into my car and then falls down into the mud
so we start up the car near the end of the line and start to move out...and heat starts climbing right away (oh yeah did I forget to mention I'm low on gas because we didn't have time to fill it) but just as it's about to redline again we finally get to a faster road, and when I'm up to speed, the air cooling does it's job and temp remains normal, but at low speeds it climbs up to boiling point....
so now we're driving all over the place trying to fins our way back to the main highway, which there are no signs and we are in the middle of nowhere, but eventually we turn around and make our way back to civilization, gas it, water it some more and START to head for home at 1230 am this morning...with me running on fumes due to lack of sleep the last 2 days, the 2 hours drive home was excrutiatingly painful, but we eventually made it home without me swerving off the road much...
So yesterday was really fun and really bad...(lotta reading)
Damn dude...and I thought my day yesterday sucked...nevermind!
Glad you made it back home and survived that crazyness.

Ha! Skarr is a Parrothead! Who'd a thunk it?
I won't make fun though, I had a great time at Jimmy Buffet's Margarittaville in Los Vegas only to find out he was going to be there the night after I left Vegas.
I did walk away with a magnetic sticker I proudly display on my cube...
MILK SUCKS! GOT MARGARITAS?

Yeah I started listening to him in college, been to key west a bunch of times and always had to hit margaritavile for margaritas and a cheeseburger in paradise, and I found out I was at Key West margaritaville the day before JB played there tooSeret Sajet wrote:Ha! Check that radiator for leaks. Especially on the hose clamp that leads from your engine into the bottom of the radiator. I think they boil over because they're getting low (you forget to fill the resevoir lately?)Skarr wrote:yeah the ole 88 firebird is on her last legsTensonic wrote:Damn dude...and I thought my day yesterday sucked...nevermind!

At any rate, at least you can take comfort that you can easily replace that Firebird with a brand new...oh wait, you can't. They don't make 'em anymore. Brilliant!

sounds like the fan clutch is hosed my man.
pop your hood and look at the fan, at idle speeds this puppy should be spinnin'.
If not you probably just need a fan clutch.

ANOTHER THING TO LOOK AT SKARR IS THE FRONT OF THE RADIATOR
IF IT HAS A CRAP LOAD OF DIRT ON IT YOUR NOT GONNA GET THE AIR FLOW YOU NEED. JUST SPRAY WITH GARDEN HOSE . OR CHECK OUT YOUR WATER PUMP. EASY TO REPLACE AND NOT EXPENSIVE
