This is what I have:
AMD 1600 processor
MSI Mainboard
ATI 9000 PRO video
768 PC2100 ram
USB Plantronics DSP 500 Headset sound
USB SAITEK Joystick
What I am considering purchasing:
AMD Athlon 64 3500 / 2.2 GHz processor
MSI Mainboard (K8N Neo2 Platinum)
ATI X800 PRO
1gig PC3200 ram
sticking with the headset and joystick above.
Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated. I have built a lot of systems in the past but as you can see my last computer built for myself was a long time ago.
edited for more specific stuff.

I am by NO MEANS a computer expert...but I have heard from several very nerdy (and ergo reliable in my book) computer people that the ATI vid cards have a tendency to have more incompatability issues with software than the Nvidia ones. Somebody who knows what they are talking about wanna jump on this one?

I know that is true about the pre 7500 I think. But I don't know that is much of an issue anymore as ATI has been gaining market share.
It could be a consideration since all I do on my home PC is play games and surf porn.
I have his and hers computers. my wife's has all the office and money packages on it.

I would not considering purchasing a 64-bit system unless you are putting a Athlon 64 in there. Keep in mind. your system bus is only 32bits anyway so you will not be utilizing 64bit processing.Until more applications become available that run 64-bit applications(such as rendering software), 64bit processing is a bit usless to the consumer. Even if you get a motherboard that supports PCI Xpress(64 bit PCI) you will find it difficult to find quality video cards out there.
On video cards, it's all about the drivers. Finding the right driver version is essentially whether you get NVIDIA or Radeon. Personally, I prefer the Radeon cards because the pipeline is a bit larger than the NVIDIA cards(although there are other factors involved there)
