Throwing in the towel on RP...

Post Reply
I'm burnt out. I have failed miserably to GM an event in game. When Jabe died and nobody RP'ed any sort of funeral. I should have gotten a clue then that nobody was interested in him as a character or the story that would follow.

I tried real hard to write something interesting and its gone through a lot of changes. My original plan would have ended the event next March but I scrapped it and went with something quicker. I knew the whole time I would use JTL as much as possible as a tool to end the event. I got thrown some curves when SOE did not include some expected functionality so I spent the last 10 days writing around it - I wrote 3 different endings and finally I had one that I thought was feasible. But again, its not - nobody is interested.

Seems like the only events that work go like this: "Show up here, something is going to happen". Then: "ok now do this". Gee, thats fun.

The big curve in my event was seen as just another bar fight at S&V. There were reasons S&V was chosen as the venue for changing the course of my story arc. Unfortunately it was exactly that, just another bar fight.

I can't even get more than two TIE pilots to volunteer to fly around as a "squadron" for an event. This been a recurring theme though, general disinterest. People have there own thing going on and I respect that. I am not generally interested in a lot of other events so in turn I can't expect people to show interest in mine.

Logically there is no way I can show back up in character, cause I killed myself and have failed to write my way out of it. So I am throwing in the towel. I am done role playing. After watching a lot of it, I have realized that RP is really just self serving and I am just as guilty as the next guy.

So when you see me on the other side of the fence, standing around in Theed wearing hotpants and a composite armor chest plate waiting to grief somebody - at least I'll be having some form of fun again.

Roleplayers might bust on people from Delta, CRIM or any other "uber" guild, but one thing they have is the ability to organize in large groups and accomplish something. Recently a Rebel guild on Gorath got together and blew up 6 Imperial faction bases across the server. To me, there is more to admire about that than any RP event I have seen thus far - even if they were wearing hotpants the whole time.

Peace out.

ITs a real shame because I seem to be out of the loop a lot of times on the events going on. And I was looking forward to assisting you in certain matters. I am more of the tell me how you want me to fit into your story type of person as opposed to coming up with my own stories. I can understand your frustration and its a damn shame.

Wow.... I'm curious if anyone else feels like they just got slapped in the face with a swift backhand???

While I understand you're disappointment in your event not working, I am firmly confused as to how it failed, personally, I was very interested in what was going to happen.... It's one of the bigger reasons I started back up... Only I'm never in the same spots you are... I was once and I got a little bit of info, but I wanted to get more, and I never really got to...

But I will say that I firmly disagree with the guild in hotpants blowing up faction bases is something worth while....

The last few days I have been involved with a very small RP with Krit, and Zera from MERCS and Rebekkah, one of Kayana's alts... And I've been RPing everyday... Normally I would only do it at places like S&V...

And since I've been RPing everyday I think the game has become so much more in depth....

I don't mean to bash you at all, this just happens to be where our opinions differ... but I think that when people run around in groups of 20 all wearing hotpants and blowing stuff up makes SWG "just another video game" and to me it's not "just another video game"

Since I started getting enveloped in SWG I rarely play anything else because this game alone fulfills all of my wildest fantasies.... when it comes to video games that is... It does that for me because it's not "just another video game"

I think people that pull stuff like I mentioned before ruin it for the people like me... that's not to say I don't break character and act goofy sometimes... But I'm sure that this guild you speak of does things of that nature on somewhat of a regular basis...

If you want to blow something up, play GTA, if you want depth, mystery, intrigue, and most importantly, The Force, play SWG...

I guess all I really wanted to say was that I'm sad you're giving up on the event, and just a little distrought that you're giving up on RPing all together... Gonna miss the RP Jabe man...

Your post is well read, for I've kind of felt the same way towards RPing in SWG. It's practically impossible for me considering my availability is somewhat random. I can never make it to evens on time and NEVER have any idea as to what's going on with anyone's events.

I showed up to the Roba one night (months ago) because I had time one friday evening and essentially 'winged-it' the entire time. I had no idea what was going on with anyone else or particular events but it was fun for quite some time. It then struck me after a couple hours of talking to my droid that while it was great for background elements, the reality was that I turned into a crazy person. I essentially talked to myself for an entire evening with no real motive.

I attempted to show up to a casino night but wound up getting there a little later than they were to start. I had NO idea what was going on, but a couple people were whipping the heck out of someone and the overall mood was chaotic. Did i ever find out what was going on? No. I didnt' really get all that stoked about scouring the forums to find out.

I'm not trying to be negative towards anyone about their events, I'm just pointing out my side of things. Please continue. I know you're having lots of fun with it.

As for Jabe's death, the only reason I knew about it is because I had overheard Seret talking about it at work and read mention of it here on the forums. I'm not even sure if I ever saw Jabe in game. It really sucks that you're discouraged, but i guess that happens to the best of us.

Good luck with your future SWG endeavors. I'm sure I'll see you in town. Hopefully, I won't be the crazy Rodian talking to his droid.

Well...

This is a hard question to answer..

You can't blame other people for not being interested in your character. You can only blame yourself. If your want a deep reaction to something that happens to your character, you need to have established a deep emotional connection with those characters. This takes time.

I liked your stories, thought they were excellent. You had a nice epic plot. Maybe if you figured out a way to draw people in, you'd get the response you were looking for.

RP is hard, and we are all figuring out how to do it better each day.

As far as RP versus uber...
I've blown up 3 bases in a day before. If it was really all that fun I would still be doing it. Besides, there is nothing saying you can't do both (RP and uber). If you are curious, hook up with these folks and take down a base.

I don't think you know how well you have it Jabe.. in the world of PVP you will be exposed to the the worst of the worst. People who will grief and exploit every possible chance they get.

Also, in the world of PVP.. be prepared to be asked to log on in the wee hours of the morning to take down a base.. people set their vuln times at all sorts of whacky hours.

When it is all said and done, taking out a base accomplishes little. The GCW is in no way affected, nor is the timeline. You find yourself thinking about game mechanics moreso than "Star Wars" and your characters role in that universe. My 2 cents.

Hey, Jabe. I'm not going to try and change your mind or anything like that. As I've said privately, sometimes you just need a break for whatever reason and at that time you should just take one (plus, breaks give more time for your Id to lobby away at your Ego and SuperEgo for what you really want, which is a roleplay arc that makes Rime of the Ancient Mariner look like a short story  Did I say I wasn't trying to change your mind? ).

One thing to remember that might help put things in perspective:

If you're looking for an audience and/or crowd participation, then think of those two terms as other "players" in different media do. What Roleplay really is in it's essence is show business. We as roleplayers are all fundamentally actors, writers, directors, and producers who use a relatively new hybrid medium, MMORPG's. There is really no Prime Time for MMORPG's as even in the conventional "after 5pm" set, game time is contested by real life obligations. Toss in competition from other contnet and events in-game and it's a really unpredicatble task to deal with.

Not having an audience doesn't mean necessarily that no one was interested. It's possible that any number of intangibles kept your story from taking flight.

I know that you know all this, but I'm not sure there is always a direct connection between story success and player interest. Just think of all the great TV shows that never get off the ground.

In summary, our capacity for generating ideas is limitless. Our time to realize and share them is finite.

I've been here before, many times...

Some characters...and here i go risking insult but hey, i'm not the type to sugarcoat...

some characters are more attention hogging than others. Sometimes its the person behind the keyboard that forces this, sometimes its just the way the characters work.

Generally, play a female and someone will want to play falling in love with that character...just as in RL, females can steal the attention of an entire night by just being...available.

Its hard to motivate people to be too involved in other storylines because 90% of RPers are what i call "main character roleplayers"

These are the types who cannot be in an rp environment without being the focus point. Characters that shouldn't stand out, force themselves to stand out just to get attention, they want people to remember them. Now its one thing to want to be noticed...i mean no one wants to go completely unnoticed and think their rp is meaningless. But how "amazing" is it if you have a fight to the death and narrowly escape...EVERY DAY....you gotta have some "boring" times to make those special ones really stand out. This is why I got so fed up with the 800 bounty attempts on me daily, i even started rping as Zo being bored with it.

People in general are impatient...they don't want to take 3-4 months to unfold a story and make it awesome...they wanna play out the struggle, conflict, fall and redemption of a character...in a 2 hour session.

Not too many people know the members of ttf too well....

This is on purpose, the ones i know as the best rpers we have...generally don't make scenes of themselves...

Its a HUGE responsiblity to make yourself the main character, and not be cheesy, boring, or arrogant and annoying. I try to NOT let myself be this, but the roba is "my" club in rp (and payments of 300k a week to the band :) ) anyway,
i found myself multiple times "forced" into it and i always feel like "great, here i am being what i hate in the rp world...the attention hog"

I'll wrap this up,

Jabe, don't quit RPing, find Rpers who think like you do and stick to them, yeah you may not be famous in the community, but...and Mods this isn't meant to be an insult just an assertation of reality so don't think this is a flame...

but we all can't be sex oriented dancers having every horny guy (no one would admit it but reality tells me that I know some would like to take it beyond mere rp) all over us anytime we speak and bowing to our everyword in hopes of a Lekkujob.
