so let's hear it. I have been running Win2k just fine for a while now, but I can get winxp pro ed. for $15 (wife gets huge discounts on software at school) and was wondering why I should or shouldn't get it.
so give me your reasons
thx!
ok techies, why should I get Win XP??
Frankly I hate it. I don't think it's user friendly. Of course I tend to just hate change in general so that could be it.... but I doubt it. I find even the Office XP programs to be annoying, maybe the problem is more that it's too user friendly and not that it's unuser friendly. I don't know but I hate it either way.

Why get it?
Because your OS is now 5 years old and becoming dangerously close to getting into "outdated" status. Yes, it's still supported, but there's so many things about XP that run smoother.
Sure, there's things about XP that are annoying, but overall it's just a better package. Built in firewall, etc.

I found that most games run much faster with XP than with 2000, which I used for waaaaaay too long.

Other than Hashum i think that XP is very userfriendly and much more stable than most of the other windows versions.
I've got it since almost two years now and almost all problems i had in that time (about two or three) were hardware problems, almost never anything that was caused by the os itself.
Get it if you can ;o)

XP boots 20x faster... it just fater than 2000 for everything, including games. Win2k was never really a good home PC OS to begin with - it a business class OS and therefore does not give the performance it should for gaming, etc.
If you're really skeptical, get a blank hard drive, load it up with your games and apps and give it a spin.

Good Article found here.

Valid points from both sides on the table.
The only thing I don't agree with in that article, is that xp uses more processing power, they are basing this on styles and effects and all of the "pretty" things in xp.
All of these can be disabled. as a matter of fact, anything you could do in 2000, that has changed to a new way of doing it can be changed back to the old style.
I would highley suggest switching to winXP, and going to www.TweakXP.com and doing every tweak that will make your system runn faster and better.
At the price you are getting it at it is a steal, and I would definitley go for it. Like Jabe said, grab a blank HD and load it... test it.

Are these the kind of tweaks that your average computer n00b could do, or is it better left to the more computer oriented folks? I went to the site and got kinda lost, but I am always interested in making my computer run a bit faster.

Because me 4 year old daugter can click on her own profile and start surfing to the Dragon Tales website to play games and print out pages to color.
Ctrl-alt-delete plus user name and password is just a lot of excess work to a 4 year old.

The directions are pretty good for most of the tweaks... their are some tweaking applications you can find on the net too like...Del'tar Chagas wrote:Are these the kind of tweaks that your average computer n00b do, or is it better left to the more computer oriented folks? I would recommend XP pro because of its new technology filesystem improvments over the older NTFS system used in 2000 and NT. not to mention XP itself is based off the NT plateform. So the security is improved by three fold. The hardware abstraction layer is even more previlent then in previous window's OS's which can keep you from damaging your hardware and keep viruses and what not from even being able to configure your hardware in harmful manners. Overall the security and performance of XP are wonderful. Add media center to your XP pro and you have everything you will ever need
