I know I do, depending on my schedule and how often I use it.

Actually It hasn't been as bad as it used to, I use my work laptop for experimenting with shit so I don't jack up my pc with software it doesn't need :P

yeah Novall, I did do a bunch of work in safe mode...but...it didn't fix my problem. I think it is called the VX2 downloader. From what I understand, it actually runs a hidden process IN safe mode. At least that is what the geeks that wrote the websites I researched were saying. I dunno. But it seems to be working properly now.

I only reformat my home server and document PC HDD's. I NEVER NEVER EVER EVER EVER....EVER EVER EVER...EVER touch my game PC HDD. I've tweaked and modded and poked around everything with tools like RivaTuner and a home cooked OC program for that extra 4% on my "unclockable" intel board that I am to paranoid to do a reformat on it in fear of losing somthing that will take my 83,000 on 3dmark05 down to shit levels. Infact, the HDD is 4 years old and has only been reformated twice . Guess that means I need to ghost!!!

I have done the modding thing, it just ends up biting me in the ass when a component blows because it was slightly too hot over time. I just can't afford to tinker like that anymore.

Ok here is another vague computer query. I know that without knowing the particulars of my system and setup, it will be difficult to figure out that problem is, but here we go...

I just hooked a brand new computer up to our dsl network at work. The connection says I am connected at 100mbps, but I am getting notoriously slow internet and download speeds. Like 6-10k per second...while other computers on the network are getting upwards of 120k/sec....


Anyone have a clue why the crap this is happening?

Try putting another network card in it. I have sene problems where a certain NIC and a router don't mix. I ahve an IBM thinkpad that is notoriously allergic to my Linksys router for no good reason. All the other PC's work fine. I went with a different NIC and it was fine.

I thought about that for a second, but that shouldn't be the problem. Both computers in question are using the same network adapter. The one that came factory installed in the Gateways. Anything else?

Bad cable? Try switching them and see if the computers trade bad habits. Or the NIC could be bad too and you would ahve to swap the NICs to figure that out..

If its not your cable it could be the fact that you are using GATEWAY.

Hijackthis is another good little program. I haven't reworked my OS since my rebuild a 14 months ago. I have redeemed several computers, and in a home with just me and the wife, we run a 4 PC network.
I like AVG... cuz its free.

your network problem sounds like it could easily be any of the things Jabe described. Try swapping the card with a completely different one, and see how it works. May want to see if the computer is just slow on the network, ie: with other comps on the LAN.

Did you manually set your network connection? If so then you need to make sure you set it correctly. Incorrect DHCP and DNS will ruin your day pretty fast.

Usually if the NIC goes bad, its all or nothing. Get a cheap cable tester and plug in the cables and see if your possiably getting a short. Also check the connection inside the RJ45's to see if all the wires have been punched through and that PART OF THE PLASTIC SLEEVE IS UNDER THE PUNCHDOWN TAB. That has to be under there for a true good connection. Also check the lights on the NIC. If your getting all orange then your not getting a full connection either.

Also try pinging out to another computer on the network by using the /ping command. Try running the following commands also from the CMD (command prompt) to clear your network cache and reset your connection:

ipconfig /renew
