For anyone that hasn't seen it, there is a fight night forum in the "Under Development" category. I am currently taking sign-ups from interested parties. I am trying to form a formal galactic commission of local representiaves who will run fighting arenas in their respective player cities.
People who are "in" as of now will likely become the local fight commissioner for their city. Feel free to sign up, check out what I have written and talk about any aspect of what I am working to do with the community.

Due to the apparent lack of interest, I am going to be rethinking how I am going to structure this whole thing. Instead of having a galactic commission with different venues, I think I will focus on one roaming venue and select one person who will run a seperate gambling ring around the event.
I am not giving up on this..

Maybe break it up into catagories...
Maybe catagories based on how many SP spent in combat skills?
200+ - Category 1
151- 200 - 2
101- 150 - 3
100- - 4
To be honest, this is the first time I've even bothered to look because most of the time, I'm going to be outclassed from the start.
Doing it this way would allow anybody to participate. Even a Newbie, or someone with a re-roll.

The problem with this is the fact that there is no way to tell how many SPs have been spent on combat skills. Someone could like and say 100, when they have 200+ committed and the judge would never know.Isleh wrote:Maybe break it up into catagories...

While people could easily lie, I think it would be quickly apparent what skills they actually had when they whipped out the specials or had unnatural speed. Making a rule like, "any liars will be disqualified from X number of future fight nights and from retaining fight night titles" would hopefully discourage that sort of behavior.
Maybe simply have Novice, Journeyman, and Master level fights, similar to the system Isleh suggested, only it wouldn't require people telling skillpoints. Rather, based on the number of wins.
Won Fights:
0--10 Novice
11-20 Apprentice
21-50 Journeyman
51-100 Master
101 Grandmaster?
This number system is pretty big, but from what I've seen at dueling events like Dariis', duels go quickly. This would also allow true Novice level fighters to stay at Novice level and arrange Novice-to-Novice level fights. If they fight their hearts out and reach 11 wins and reach "Rank 11 Apprentice" and that's the highest they can get, that'll be a great achievement for them.
This system would also allow those with uber combat templates to move up through a system quickly, and follows the traditional gaming XP system...as things get harder, you have to get more 'wins' to 'level up.'
Also maybe to prevent Novice levels from progressing to Grand Master status with Novice Level fights, perhaps to level up you have to fight someone one level higher than you, or something. You know, purchase a certification from the commissioner, something like that.
I'm not a combat person, but there's my idea.

I know. It all comes down to the honor system and yes, we'll probably get some templated toon pwn3ing someone with pistols 4 eventually. The only thing we can do is take their name down and ban them from futher events.Zannon wrote:The problem with this is the fact that there is no way to tell how many SPs have been spent on combat skills. I thought that a second and/or third judge can just watch the combat tab and look for specials that they should not be doing. Still, that dosn't prevent a templated player from not doing any specials.
The alternative is a complete lack of intrest from players who have not spent every SP in a combat profession.

I am a closet math geek who loves numbers and statistics..
Another Ranking system you can use is how they rate chess players.
I won't go into all the details, but you get more points for beating tougher players, lose more for losing to weaker players, etc.. The strength of this system is that it is results based. The more matches fought, the more accurately rated the players will be. This system works in the real world, I don't see why it can't work here.
Another strength of this system is that leader can stay there even after losing a match. He may lose points, but perhaps not enough to be dethroned as the point leader.
Posting rankings WILL drive interest up. People will want to be a part of it to see their name on the board and see if they can make it to the top.

Could I reccomend a spot Jabe? I've always seen that big fighting arena just outside of Nym's place and have always thought; This would be a nice place to see a tournie!

I like it. We just might do it, the only problem is getting people there without them having factional problems.Jedi2b wrote:Could I reccomend a spot Jabe? I've always seen that big fighting arena just outside of Nym's place and have always thought; This would be a nice place to see a tournie!

The SCA does tourneys IRL --they fight with rattan weapons representing swords, polearms, hammers, axes and they do fencing tourneys. They do several different styles of tournaments...round-robins, elimination, triple elimination and points.
They also do fighter practices.
Newbies and Dukes, and everyone in between, fight each other. It leads to mentoring, classes, and classic game competition. The end result is more adult play, even for the equivalent of the 1337. I think y'all may be worrying too much.
The initial phases may be a little rough during development, but experience shows that this should be an excellent venue for everyone - even power players - to learn and develop into better players. Eventually rules of good conduct should develop and gradually spread over the server.
I think that it would pay for the whole community to support this, even those of us who are not into PvP.
