Crashing Since Yesterday

Post Reply
My computer has been frequently crashing since yesterday afternoon. And only when I'm playing SWG. The time that I spend in-game before each crash has varied. Sometimes I can get 2 hours, others it crashes as soon as I can see the world.

Each time after a crash, the computer auto-reboots, and there is a windows message saying "the system has recovered from a serious error".

The worst was late last night. It crashed me and when I logged back all of my hotkeys were wiped to the Launch Day positons. Everything else was fine though.

This has never happenned before. At worst the game will crash due to lag, but never rebooting the whole system.

Could it be due to the patch that came out Tuesday? That's the first time something like this happenned. Norton Virus Scans and Ad-aware are both negative.

Of course this would happen when I'm having more fun in-game than ever before :x

Any suggestions? Has anyone heard of this happenning since Tuesday?

Update your video card drivers. I've found that if you're using older drivers, it makes SWG crash after a big patch.

As Zan said, play with your video drivers.

For awhile there, after EVERY patch (even the tiniest smallest almost "hidden" patches) I'd have to go back and re-install my video drivers again. You might not even need the newest ones, just re-download whichever one you're currently using (or if you're like me and you keep an archive of them, grab it) and re-install it AFTER the game patches (keep this in mind next patch, for instance).

I had the same crash to desktop or crash to restart problems you're describing before I installed my new vid card (I also updated my sound card, which also seemed to help; I was using an old 8 or 16 bit card). Your video card is completely choking on what are probably the pixel shader updates that came with this most recent patch.

If re-installing your current driver doesn't work, try the newest drivers for your card.

So far...
I've downloaded the latest drivers (released 7/27) from Nvidia site and rebooted. Result: crashed to reboot during world loading.

Did System Restore to a couple weeks ago when things worked. Result: crashed to reboot after 40 minutes (and a full HAM Buff!).

Question: Even when I cold start my computer without touching SWG, I get a message of "The system has recovered from a serious error." First noticed this morning. Would the patch still affect the computer even if I didn't launch SWG?

What's your operating system? Also, what firewall are you using? If you're running ZoneAlarm, get uninstall it immediately. ZoneAlarm seriously funks up your system processes. Get Sygate or McAffee instead.

Run scandisk (scandisc?). Sounds like ya have an bad sector where a system file is located. Ya might as well run a defrag afterwards as well.

and then you might try to reinstall your windows and see if it corrects the problem....although when I did that a couple weeks ago I had to format my hard drive, so what do I know , lol

You may also want to try to do a full scan in SWG from the intro menu...
