A friend of mine confessed that he'd never seen the Star Wars Trilogy. Just never got around to it. He has little idea what it all leads up to! (Hey, the guy is really a hardworking, very focused student pilot. All he does is eat, sleep, and drink airplanes. As for his childhood...ya' got me).
So he's telling me how he's just bought the paperbacks of Eps 4-6:
"I'm at the part where Darth Vader captures that ship with the Princess and R2-D2 and R-3PO (his words) eject down to the desert.."
The wonder in his eyes was a-ma-zing! Like the old interviews of people from the '70s exiting their first viewing of Star Wars. This is another educated grown adult.
Whenever I meet or hear about people who've never seen Star Wars, I'm incredibly envious. I just get nostalgic about the fantastic wonder I remember feeling the first time I saw it. Nothing like it.
Then the questions.
HIM: "What happens to Princess Leia?" WAIT! Don'ttellmedon'ttellmedon'ttellme!" "What's the whole thing about Luke Skywalker, anyway? No, nevermind! I wanna read it. Forget I asked!"
ME: "You know, I have all of the movies on DVD."
HIM: "Really?! I'll pick them up tomorrow! NO! Actually let me finish reading the books first. I want to get it all pictured in my mind before I see it."
 Craaaazy! He's now in a mad dash to fit reading all the books, watching the prequels, and the Clone Wars cartoons into an already strict schedule, all before Episode 3 comes out.
Weird wild stuff.
Envy
Funny. While I get that envy with some things (Kool Aid just doesn't taste the same anymore, and I don't get the same giggly-tingle I used to when I read Babysitter's Club Snowed In Super Special), I don't ever get that way with SW. I guess because SW is such a positive and active part of my life still. I think because it's so special for me and represents a lot of important themes and issues I think I'll always carry with me, I won't ever feel like, "Gosh, I wish I could watch it again for the first time." Why is SW so popular still today? Because it's timeless, man. Deals with timeless issues.

Yeah, and multiple re-release/revisions between in-progress prequels never hurts. :lol:Dwilah wrote:Why is SW so popular still today? Because it's timeless, man. Deals with timeless issues.

well that does hurt, how many times do we have to change the whole "who shot first?" han/greedi debaucle?Keer wrote:Yeah, and multiple re-release/revisions between in-progress prequels never hurts. :lol:Dwilah wrote:Why is SW so popular still today? No argument there, but it didn't hurt the bottom line at all. Even with that travesty of a change those copies still flew off the shelves.Skorixor wrote:well that does hurt, how many times do we have to change the whole "who shot first?" han/greedi debaucle?Keer wrote:Yeah, and multiple re-release/revisions between in-progress prequels never hurts. :lol:Dwilah wrote:Why is SW so popular still today? I guess that's one thing that I don't envy the new viewers for. They get to see Solo's head do a Terminator 2 and morph away from a point blank blaster shot. How could he miss? He had the biggest eyeballs this side of Ackbar.

Oh man, rip those paperbacks out of his hands and force him to see the films. I don't care HOW good the books are, those were films first and should be viewed as such.
Please, this man needs to see them on a large screen, somewhere, somehow.
Also, has he already seen Eps I and II?

Yeah, he'll be checking the movies out after the books are done, from Ep 4 on. Funny, but he's instinctively made the decision to watch the prequels last like the rest of the world. No guidance from me there.
Too bad he'll have to wait until the inevitable theatre re-screening of all 6 in a row to see them as they were really really meant to be seen. Still, it'll be a treat. Nothing beats that first time, for the surprise factor if nothing else.

Soon to come, though...thus inevitable.
