Power Supply replacement

But you could have fun modding your current. Jigsaws are cool!
Is it just me, or does anyone else hear an underlying maniacal laughter with those words?

Ok, so this is why I am not a computer person...

I open up my tower tonight, just to nose around...see where my power supply connects to everything, yada yada yada...

And as I am looking around I am thinking, "Damn, there is a lot of open room over here...I wonder why?"

And then it hits me. There is the power supply, there is my hard drive, there is my floppy drive, there are my video and network cards...but where is the case fan?

There is no case fan. Not one...I could have sworn there was supposed to be a little 80mm fan in there, but there was none in sight.

No wonder the damn video card got toasted...it was hotter than shit up in hurr. So the shopping list now includes 2 case fans and a power source.

Oh and I couldn't for the life of me get the 4 pin connectors off of my hard drive and disk drive..and there isn't a release. Do I just yank it REALLY hard or is there a trick I don't know?

Get as many case fans as your case has fan-holes and try and create some induction (low fans blow in, high fans blow out, front to back).

As far as the 4 pin power cable connectors go, yeah, you have to PULL LIKE CRAZY to get those bastards out. I'd even recommend pliers, but be careful, you don't want to smash 'em.

If I ever get around to it... there is a company that makes an aluminum tower (or has for at least a year now) that acts as a heat sink itself; no fans needed. I've thought about going that route but the damn thing is heavy 'and' expensive.

My pins are phillips head screws to hold the suckers in; go figure.

As for fans.... I think I need more. Lot's more from the sounds mine have been making. 0- O

"Could be some pre-animate matter caught in the matrix.... maybe it's something I can transplant. Something I can transplant? " aka... dust in my fan? : p

Well, there is one slot for a case fan...and it is in the back. My though it that maybe I can cut a hole in the door that comes off and mount a fan on that, but I think that is all I can do. I really don't want to take all my components out and put them in a new case. With my luck, I will fry all of my boards and have to buy a new computer.

Swapping the parts into a new box is easier than ya think. An hour's work and you're done. Plus you'd get a new case out of the deal that you can use for your next rig (cuz you'll probably be dumping the gateway case by the time you're ready).

Ehhh....I don't know...how would I do it? I just have to disconnect everything, remember where it goes, unscrew everything and then put it into a new case?

I abhor sticking screwdrivers into my tower, but that's the only way I could see to get the motherboard out...plus there are all kinds of other things that are connected to each other with those flat, wide wire thingies...It's just kind of nightmarish. I don't like computers. I just like using them.

Plus I am always afraid that I don't ground myself properly, and I don't have one of those fancy grounding bracelets or gloves to work with computer components...nor do I have any space suitable for taking apart a computer.

If I were to do it, what would I need? The list so far has:

-Case with multiple fan openings, preferably on the front AND back
-fans for all of those openings
-450W power source
-Grounding bracelet and gloves?
-screwdriver (I assume one that is NOT magnetic, as I would like to not fuck up my stuff)

Is there anything else I would need to know before I attempt this potentially disasterous undertaking?

That's why I asked...see the question mark?

The only info I have is what I read on the internet when I looked up "power supply installation"...they said to use all that jazz because it is safe.

Also, I changed a car battery once without wearing gloves and I zapped myself. So I was just wondering.

Ummm...what about stuff like I/O and other ports and that crap? Is that all built into the front and back ends of the motherboard or do I have to disconnect and recconect that shit, too?
