I'm back and I have MAJOR comp problems..HELP!

So right before i go on vacation, my wife is using my comp, and it freezes...so she finally resets it...it reboots, you get the message that win xp was interrupted, select which option you want: if I choose normal or last good setup, the screen then goes black and nothing happens, if I choose one of the safe modes, I get a bunch of command lines on the screen and then it freezes and does nothing...

so I try to boot from the win xp cd and it starts loading up all the drivers etc, so then it goes to start the windows setup, andnothing happens...so I thought it might be a corrupted driver or somethign freezing up the process, so I unplugged everything, including pci cards...repeated the all the steps again...nothing

so now I know something major has happened because it should setup windows into a brand new blank hard disc...

currently the onlt things hooked up are the nvidia vid card, the dvd drive, the cd drive, and the new HD...

I have a amd 2100 w/ 1 gb ram

it's not a heat prob either

what the hell is going on??????????

I should hope not, considering the 37 fans you have.

I would reduce your setup to having one CD drive hooked up to the primary IDE channel with all other peripherals disconnected, including unecessary fans. Remove all the RAM chips except for the minimum you need to boot up also. Just make sure nothing is connected to the main board that doesn't have to be in order to boot up, basically.

The idea is, you need to try anything that might make the problem go away and then start hooking things back up until you nail what is causing the problem.

ok it gets even better

now when I turn it on, I get no video, or the usual "beep" from the motherboard

so I tried my last vid card, and still nothing...

So now I'm lead to believe that the motherboard has gone bad

does this seem like it's the mobo, or am I missing something?

I also switched out the power supply and it didn't solve anything

I believe that your motherboard may be defective. Since you've tried installing the OS to a new hard drive, it can be safely ruled out that there is a hard drive issue. I would say the replacement of the motherboard would be your best bet.

On a related note, what is the current wattage of your power supply? Also how many peripherals/optical disks are connected to the power supply? This may be a good time to upgrade your power supply. Strain on a power supply can cause electrical components on the MB to fluctuate. This puts more wear on the MB and can cause failure sooner.

it is a 450w ps, and i removed all non necessary stuff so it was only hooked up to 1 or 2 HD's, the vid card, and a optical drive or 2...so it should be plenty...

and thx again for the help

here's what I'm contempleting on getting then

I want to keep my agp vid card since its a nv5950ultra and can still hold up, so I have to stay with an agp slotted mobo...I also figure my mobo is an asus a7v8x and quite a few years old that it's time for an upgrade...so after doing some looking around, I came up with this combo

the msi k8n neo2 platinum
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6813130468

comes with a $25 mail in rebate, bringing it under $100 when all is said and done...a socket 939 mobo that I was going to add a amd 64 3200+ venice chip...I have 2 dimms of pc2700 ddr to put into the 2 channel (i can upgrade that later to pc3200 easily)

I based it on the following reviews

tomshardware (was at the very top of most tests)
http://www.tomshardware.com/motherboard ... 39-15.html

pcperformance
http://www.pcper.com/article.php?aid=57&type=overview

anandtech (editors choice gold)(link can be glitchy)
http://www.anandtech.com/mb/showdoc.aspx?i=2128&p=19

so right now my shopping cart at newegg has the k8n mobo $119, the amd 64 3200+ chip $190, artic silver 5 $8, and a decent fan for $23, ooooh and a free sticker weeeeeee, plus shipping = $350

whadda ya think fellas???

I figure this new setup will be pretty fast, and will hold up until agp boards go by the wayside
