Nanotech Breakthrough
Wheee! I'm glad I'm alive now, in this time! This promises a whole different future!
Gas using cars, and even hybrids, may be a thing of the past in 5 years. Wheeee! Coal using power stations, gone! My, oh my! Half the wires going from pole to pole, or tower to tower, across the country and our city streets, GONE!
YESSSS!!!
And that is just the beginning!

Maybe in 50 years, but 5 years from now I guarantee you the majority of the cars on the road will be gas powered.xyryn wrote:Gas using cars, and even hybrids, may be a thing of the past in 5 years.
It took ten years just for the low emissions standards to be populated throughout the automobile industries (and become a majority of the cars on the road), and those don't even apply to SUVs and pickup trucks.
I'll be the first guy in line for a Hydrogen powered car, should they ever become affordable (hybrid cars still aren't affordable at price tags in the $20k range), but I don't anticipate them even being on the market in another 5 years. There still has to be an infrastructure built up around them. Sure, hydrogen is easy to come by, but safely storing and dispensing it is not so easy to come by.
But nanotubes? Very cool. Where's my half pound 6 foot wide TV? I want it NOW.

The challenge is for the automobile industry to catch up on the times(not unlike the music industry). There is an archaic structure in place that's been in existance since the early 1950's. With the reliance on fossil fuels and the cost of research, alternative fuel vehicles do not pay out the dividends to car manfacturer's like traditional vehicles. Although we are starting to see an increase in alternative fuel/hybrid vehicles, American industry will be the last to embrace the new technology.
