Help!

I am having an awful time trying to come-up with a good, solid character concept. I am a female Twi-lek Entertainer. I'm not a complete noob, but recently moved from another server to Gorath because I heard there was a nice rp community here. Unfortunately - my character concept turns out to be one of the ones listed as cliche, I guess. Something of a slave or former slave currently lost in Mos Eisley. :???: Problems with this of course include: 1) not having a madame or mistress to handmaiden to. 2) not knowing how to fit myself into the community Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated

ps: if anyone can tell me how to get an avatar hosted or how to make a sig file - it would also be greatly appreciated. I appologise if this post is in the wrong spot or is asking dumb noob questions.

Well I don't know anything about problem 1) but as far as 2) goes you really don't have to worry about how to fit in, it just happens. Check out the RP Contact list and try contacting any of us IG. Once you do that things will just start naturally rolling and you'll fit in just fine.

Feel free to contact me anytime. Always glad to help someone get their feet under them.

Welcome to Gorath! If you wanted to keep some of what has been her motivation in the past but spin it a bit you might think about this. Instead of looking for someone to serve in a traditional capacity, you might instead look towards someone in an occupation that interests you and
apprentice to them to learn. That would keep a similar relationship dynamic up in the begining but allow you to grow as you progress, becoming more of an individual.

I know nothing about sigs or avatars but we have plenty of people here that do I think. Nice to meet you and once again welcome to Gorath.

Don't worry about cliche.. most Twi'leks get to this part of the galaxy because of the slavery problem. "Former twi'lek slave" is about as cliche as "wookiee with hair". Some things just are, and that is okay.

There is plenty fo room for originality in this simple concept. Were you a slave of Jabba the Hutt? Were you the slave of an imperial governor? Were you the slave of a crimelord, whom you killed, and are now running for your very life?!

The best way to get involved is to go where the roleplayers are. This is a moving target, but you can usually find people at specific events which are advertised here. There should be one tonight in New Kala'uun, Rori. This just so happens to be a twilek city.

Another good bet is to use the Roleplayer List that is run and organized by the lovely and talented Dwilah.

Post a story here on the site to pique people's interest in your character.

Last but not least.. roleplay. Being in character tends to draw other roleplayers. Having a similar background, if my character ran into yours I would seek to help you.

Handmaidens were originally maidens, but the concept grew to include matrons. In the English and French courts, it was a great honor for a Lady, be she a maiden daughter or a wife of a Lord, to serve the Queen in a full-on servant capacity. This was considered a great oportunity for the families of these handmaidens to accrue status...and/or to let the daughters meet eligible males.

The amusing part is that many of these "handmaidens" had handmaidens of their own.

Hi there and welcome to Gorath, not sure if you've seen it already, but we have a "Creating a New Character" Guide in the FAQs and Guides section. That should give you a little help, hopefully.

If you'd like some help fleshing out your character, try asking yourself a few questions like this:

--What comes most easily for me to roleplay?
--How can I build on this "natural" personality that comes to my character?

Try adding just a few quirks or personality details to your character at a time. Build her slowly and naturally as feels comfortable to you, while you play her.

Most people begin RPing with what is basically their own personality, and then add those few "quirks" that are different (maybe she is a little nervous around tall people, or is very afraid of flying) and by just adding a few basic background details, you can add a lot to start RPing with.

Maybe your character is a handmaiden instead of a slave--she has been trained carefully in serving arts but is to be a paid servant. That'd be a little different in and of itself. A whole attitude could develop from that--the few remaining professional service people have great pride in their jobs and dislike being viewed down on, especially since they tend to be in high households.

Decide what sort of a planet she is from. If she was born and raised on Ryloth, she might be dazzled by planets like Corellia and Naboo for their lush greenery and skyscrapers. If she was raised on Naboo, she might have great disdained for planet like Tatooine.

Just some ideas--just move slowly and work with what you are comfortable with.

Welcome, Ooma. Sometimes a character builds over time as well. I found with Jinx, when I had to adapt her from an old X-wing pilot concept to this new SWG concept, that just getting started was the most important thing. Ideas from different stories on TV or books or movies start coming in and you just keep writing until you have a story.

Look forward to meeting you.

Hi ya Ooma

Maybe you can start a list of facts about your character.

Start with your character's personality as a child. Outgoung? Introverted? Maybe someone you know in real life is kinda like how you imigine your character to be and you can base your character on them

Then imigine her growing up. Did she have friends, go to school? was she born a slave? The first daughter sold into slavery? Captured? Did she resist/resent being a slave? Was her previous master cruel? kind? Parents?

Take your character through her life up to where you are now. Based on the personality you defined as a child, it will help define the events that got the character to where they are now.

Also, the personality you define as a child does not need to be the personality you are playing now. The change could be a gradual one or there could be a significant and sudden change. Both can be reflected in the history you build and often inspire you to think of defining moments in the character's life that brought about the change.

Welcome to Gorath! :D

I don't have much more to add than our fellow roleplayers already have though fitting in comes very quickly to most, unless you are very shy. Like the others, you are also welcome to /friend me ingame and send a tell sometime :D
