Jedi: A New Vision

The most recent post got me thinking about the current Jedi system and how mind-numbingly boring it truly is. Sure, SOE needs to make the Jedi profession hard to come by but they also need to make it fun! I don't know who's sick idea it was that killing endless Bol's was anyone fun at all. Here is my idea:

Create a hybrid questing/grind aspect to earn the Jedi profession. The current system of utilizing quests to unlock force sensitive branches is a step in the right direction. Eliminate the endless grinding of Xp to fill those boxes up. Let's take that a step further. Didn't Ben Kenobi say that a jedi should use the force only for "knowledge and defense"? Let's create two different branches of learning: Knowledge and Defense.

Okay, then. Let's throw out preconceived expanded unniverse thought for a moment.

Allow a visit from a mysterious individual(say like the old man?) at random intervals in the gaming environment. This would could be based on time played in the game or some other metric. The Jedi would then be given a specific task, for example retrieving a book of lore that teaches some aspect of the Jedi skill. Create 5 or 6 Jedi Tomes in different areas of knowledge. Once learned, the Jedi would automatically learn the skill. This would require a specific set of rare drops to be acquired from different parts of the universe. For example, a rare drop from a beast or NPC on Dantooine or Yavin. Once the required items have been gathered, the young Padawan or Jedi would be able to have the Old Man or other NPC craft a special item required to move on to the next quest. Perhaps a key or special weapon or item of clothing needs to be fashioned that must be given to an NPC which could lead into another series of quests. Eventually be completed the series of quests, the padwan/Jedi would be given access to the area of the world where the Jedi Tome is located. This would fulfill the "knowledge" requirement.

In the Defense tree, the Jedi would be required to succesfully defend himself against specific threat inside these Jedi instances. For example, those creatures from the Timothy Zahn books that absorb the force(I won't even try spelling their name..=) These creatures would force the Padawan/Jedi to defend himself. It could be a weakened form of a Force Wielder, perhaps. Regardless, the experience from defending oneself would be a requirement. For example, part of the quest could be "Defend yourself against 30 Dark Jedi force wielders"--Notice this does not say get x ammount of xp to fulfill the defense requirement. You've set a managable goal for the potential padawan/jedi that does not rely on endless grinding. Once this requirement is fulfilled for each Jedi Tome instance in both the knowledge and defense tree, that instance will have been completed.

I have not fleshed out what skills would belong in each tree but I think some of them would be relativly easy to place...ie Healing belongs in the knowlege tree. ect.

Not really an opinion or idea; But The Force Village 'was' their great attempt to change how Jedi was attained. I do have to agree though; The lack of more quest over more grind envolved is a huge turn off of the 'new' system since it's basically 'no' better than holo grinding; Save now you can essentially just regrind meaningless xp over and over to get to where your going. (edit) ... while keeping your favorite profession.

I'm not sure where I fit in the mmo world simply because of the implementation of this 'Jedi' grind system. I'm the sort of person that likes to do things casually; but be able to have things quickly done. I don't consider myself a power gamer because speaking in stats and specials and the best thing to use where pretty much just makes me scratch my head and go, huh?

I guess, off side ranting aside, I'd like to see a more quest based system put in with less actually grinding envolved and more area specific content and puzzle solving... make that unique to the Jedi in question puzzle solving... in the game. Sorry if I derailed a bit there, Illbleed.
