This post quotes the article, I will quote it here too. Note they mention Mythic and DAOC... have I not been saying the same thing. I should be a journalist.

Fixing The Game: Whether You Like It or Not!

The Ethics of Sweeping Changes to a Released Product

Recently, Sony Online Entertainment and LucasArts took the unprecedented step of offering refunds to those who had purchased the Trials of Obi-Wan expansion pack as the company announced some sweeping changes to the game.
This is the latest incident in a string of public relations misadventures for SOE and LucasArts as they make wholesale changes to Star Wars Galaxies.

Earlier this year, the much-criticized, but ultimately accepted at least in terms of subscribers and informal polls Combat Upgrade hit the servers to a round of howling from the fans. Then, in a recent Producer Letter, Julio Torres explained that the team would be making more moves to make the game feel more like Star Wars.

Changing a live game is never easy, wrote Torres, obviously aware of the challenge. We realize that players do not like to have their experience altered. These enhancements will take some getting used to.

Obviously, it was not enough. Several days later came the offer of a refund for those who find that these new enhancements are not to your liking.

Like it or hate, it LucasArts has gone further than any other MMORPG company to reinvent their game midstream. In terms of subscribers, Star Wars Galaxies had always been a bit bitter sweet. It has more than the majority of the games on the market and by most standards would be considered a hit.

But, it is not measured by most standards. This is a Star Wars game and with that logo on the box, some believe it should have been a monster success, more akin to World of WarCraft. Thus, the question: why isnt it?

After a few years on the market where it stuck largely to the ideals that caused people to buy it in the first place, it is now in the midst of large sweeping changes.

Bottom line, Galaxies has always been a good game, but was failing to capture the true Star Wars experience that a Star Wars game really needs to deliver, said Community and Press Relations Manager Casey Keefe in an interview with MMORPG.com.

Yet, when players pay the price of a box copy and then $14.95 a month over several years to play the game is it ethical to make drastic changes that completely alter the experience?

To an outsider, the proposed changes sound like good ideas and the ideal of making the game more like Star Wars cannot be questioned. It is this that LucasArts and SOE must be counting on. And so, they choose to role the dice and risk alienating those who had already been paying their bills in favour of reaching a broader audience.

The question of whether or not the changes improve the game is not for this editorial. That is beside the point. The real question is whether or not a company should completely change its game after release?

MMORPGs are unique in that they never truly leave production. They grow and they evolve over the years that they are supported by their companies. However, I believe that once you begin to charge people for a product, you owe it to those players to maintain the core values that attracted them in the first place, while expanding on the content.

To change course as LucasArts is doing no matter how noble their goals should be the place of another game or at the very least restricted to new servers. If a company truly feels that changes are necessary and for the good of the game, offer players the option to enjoy these changes. If youre right, the classic servers will lose players and slowly be merged together, but at least in that case it is done with their needs in mind.

I would even go so far as to suggest they do this as a parallel product. Issue a new box that accurately articulates the game as it currently exists on the back and let those interested buy it. For existing subscribers, let them move over for free or a nominal fee. This opt-in model would clearly separate the two incarnations of the game, and while admittedly it would be a production headache, it would also be fairer to those who have kept the game running long enough for changes to be made.

Parallel incarnations of a game are not unheard of. Mythic Entertainment created classic servers for those Dark Age of Camelot players who did not enjoy some of the more recent changes to the game. Yes, it creates the expense of managing two different games, but it also shows a respect for the players.

LucasArts and Sony Online Entertainment have taken the opposite stance.

When you have such an accessible IP (Intellectual Property) such as Star Wars, you do the IP and its fans a disservice by providing a game based on this that doesnt deliver the true Star Wars experience, said Keefe. We wanted to change that.

I applaud the bravery of LucasArts and SOE to crusade for changes that they believe will provide their players with a better product and thus ultimately increase their profits, but for them to force this on all their players simply is not fair. In retrospect, these are decisions they should have made before launch. They were not and to force it upon everyone is thumbing your nose at those who made the game a success in the first place.

Ultimately, time can be the only judge of whether or not these changes have a positive impact upon the game and its community. Yet, in my opinion, while their desire to correct the mistakes of the past is admirable, the manner in which they are doing it is not.

Very well articulated. I agree with the author's points to a degree. It is SOE's discretion to change the game at any time, but they could have done this much better. Instead they've alienated their loyal subscriber base. I think they should have just rolled these new mechanics into another game or incorporated them into SWG2.

I do feel for all the FS people who were on the verge when this crap hit. It was not very classy how SOE handled this mess.

A question to ponder. They say they made the changes to make SWG feel more like Star Wars. What was it that made the game for you not feel like a Star Wars Game?

For me at first it was the lack of vehicles and space combat. Then latter it became the swarn of Jedi. Did the NGE fix that? No it made it eaven easier to become Jedi hence furthering the the game from a true Star Wars feel for the time period in which the game is set.

Thanks, Illbleed.....I finished my 6th branch of FS skills on the Sunday before the NGE - too late to unlock. Then the Old Man came to me on Tuesday (the day the NGE went live) afternoon and gave me the (useless) Mellichae quest. I had some great help, and we killed Mellichae, only for me to get a message stating that although I had met the requirements for beginning them, I would not be allowed to do the Padawan trials. :???:

Perhaps I should have dropped any and all RP as soon as the NGE was announced. Then I could have finished in time and had my second character (really the only reason I was even doing the Village stuff) before this mess. Instead, I went about enjoying the game with my friends, hunting as a Combat Medic and dancing with the Kreetles. Apparently, that's not what SOE had/has in mind for me.

Sorry for the negativity. I really AM trying to like the game, and I'm still playing every day. I'm just really affected, as many of us are, by the fact that every time I log in, there's another "goodbye" email from a departing friend. More and more, I find myself wishing I'd discovered the game two years ago, so I could have enjoyed more time with everyone.

Continuity was, again, snuffed out by the Devs a long time ago by stating that the game should be thought of as an 'alternate' timeline and 'not' set in stone per batum Episode 4-6 cannon. Was that a good choice? That's a different matter.

What they've done makes sense. Look at percentages of players going for or playing what professions. Scale the game down to only those professions people are playing the most. Yes, this does alienate a bunch of us that liked Creature Handler and the like; But it also capitolizes on what people apparently want to play!

What was lacking? Well, Space, Vechicles.. the feeling that we were living in an era where there could have been Jedi in hiding still. Episode 3 seems to support that despite what we see and hear in E4-6. A setting like what we have here isn't so far from the truth. In expanded universe we basically get to see Jedi resurface that 'were' around during the suggested years right after the clone wars up to the establishment of The New Republic.

Continuity in this case... very moot point.

What is a problem; And I'll still agree with this... is how SOE and LA has handled PR with us on this. I think they've tried to correct that mistake by offering a refund.

Is it a different game now? Yes.
Is it still Star Wars Galaxies? To me, Yes, it is.

The more I see bashing of it... the more I wish people would either peacefully move on... or at least wait a few more months for the New Game to be a little more polished 'then' start the assault on SOE.

All this tends to do is alienate already alienated customers against each other. At least... that is what I'm thinking at the moment.

I seem to remember a saying we tend to learn growing up...

"Would've, should've, could've... but didn't."

Yoda might say, "Adapt, or adapt not, there is no try."

Some of us are tired of adapting... and that's fine. But let's try and keep some optimism for those that want to give the new game a shot.

Do you really like the changes and the way they shafted your friends Batty?

I'm not flaming you, I just think you are clinging to hard the the fluff and BS they are cranking out. Consider this to be like when one friend slaps another across the face to save his life.

I hated this at first, then said "eh, I'll try it." Now I am back to hating it. The ONE AND ONLY reason I can still be found in the game is bacause of you guys. Shortly before the NGE I moved. I now find myself in a deserted wasteland. All my friends and family are out of my reach, the only thing I had left was this community. I wanted to stop playing, but I came back to be with my friends.

Now I am being flogged by SOE. I want to get out, but I don't want to leave my friends. I find the new game to be rediculous and childish. SOE has no concern for us, or what we want.

I think everyone is entitled to their opinion. And I think SOE is losing a lot of good subscribers over this. As far as the shaft goes... We all knew this could happen if we'd even bothered to look at the box.

Game Experience Subject To Change! That alone allows them to do whatever they want with it. I'm sorry, but to me that says it all. I got ticked off at CU. Threatened to quit then... but wound up staying and eventually liking it. Continuity. I gave that up a long time ago. But it still feels like Star Wars.

The only shafting I'm feeling at this point is not from the SOE end. Their trying to make a new game. A game that everyone was practically screaming for since launch. But, it's not the style some of us were expecting. It feels like the shafting has gone from a horrible PR relations from SOE and LA to us... to Us making damn sure we know how much each of us hate this or that and more or less dragging down those that want to try and make good of the changes down with ya.

Am I sympathetic to the negative feelings though? Yes, I am. I don't like seeing anyone get shafted. I really don't. But we can either stick with these changes or move on to a different game.

I'm possitive I hate NGE is more than enough to get the point across.

I actually liked the CU, since I was used to level systems.

The only thing this game was lacking was a reason for PVP and a GCW. THAT is where the "star warsy" feeling is lost.
PVP-GCW zones would save this game, yet they didn't try it. The system in place is a lame excuse.

There are things I dont like about the CU, such as armor certs, weapon certs, and the like. Why limit the game. It was cool that you just failed to wield the weapon properly or to maximum effect.

There is absolutely no depth to the combat now. At least that's the way I see it. I am sitting at 65, and theres almost no potential for me to move on. Even with mustafar, they nerfed the XP.

Back to the original point: I feel more cheated than anything else. I have been treated very well by companies like Mythic. They wouldn't do something this stupid. Regardless of likes/dislikes for the new system, that is terrible customer service.

The box says "gameplay may change" that is just a cop out. The printed manual that came with the game is completely useless to me now, what does that show me?

This IS NOT the same game... the manual is printed proof. It doesn't feel more like star wars to me at all, fancy quests considered.
