Combat Upgrade

Been fencing for nearly a dozen years, on and off.

Epee is my game, started with foil, obviously, like everyone else (I'd do saber if it wasn't such a pansy-assed sportified whip-tastic version of a real blade art.)

Not that it has any bearing on a video-game, but we've pretty much determined that if you had your sword out, standing about 30 feet away from someone with a holstered weapon, even if they were expecting it, an expert fencer (using proper footwork) or especially a kendo or iai-do master could get to the gunman before he got a shot off. I'm talking about real weapons that are truly holstered and NOT in a powdered holster with no safety or holster guard and a hair trigger.

It comes from the natural human instinct to panic the hell out when someone's rushing you with a melee attack and you haven't been trained how to handle it with only a pistol. There isn't a cop out there (who didn't have formal fencing training) who would think to run (really shuffle) backwards while bringing the gun to bare if he was being charged.

But that kinda brings the argument full circle, and that's that everyone in game's figured out to run from the TKA artists. And yes, accuracy should be SEVERELY penalized against a human sized target while running, and it isn't.

/shrug.

Hah! Who'da thought I'd ever meet another fencer (remember I'm from North Dakota). I wish I could've tried Epee, but they were a little concerned to hand us the 'real' blades until I tip control caught up with my footwork (I was a soccer player who was more inclined to gross motor control than finesse). Sorry about the derailment, back to your regularly scheduled thread topic...

Interesting to hear your commentary X'an. Nice hat BTW.
