Serious Gut Check Question

Keer wrote:Would You Still Be Playing Galaxies If It Wasn't Based On Star Wars?
Yes, at the current level of immersion, interest and community I feel, I would still play if it was just "Galaxies".

When I log in now, it is not because it is Star Wars. It is about the stories going on around my character and all the potential interesting things that may happen.

I like live RP, have played in several genres. I was talked into SW by my twin, stayed because i'm fascinated by the economics and the changes that have occurred since i joined.

Iago introduced me to Gorath, and I've since become fascinated by the online RP. As a result, I've found RPers on my main server, too. And they are somewhat into one of my major interests - comparative religions!

I read science fiction when i have time, and catch every SF movie that comes out. Of course, I love Star Wars...but it wouldn't have been enuff, in and of itself, to get me into the game. And the Jedi grinders were almost enuff to drive me away. 8-)

ooh! I am always looking into getting into discussions about this. I try to bait people by bringing up the Goddess (hopefully not too much).

Confession 1: I would never have tried this kind of online game if it wasn't Star Wars. The myth and qualities it the movies just appealed to me more than anything tempting friends talked about in EverCrack. A monthly fee game just wasn't to be considered.

Confession 2: If it weren't for the Sisterhood of Darkrealm sending out an e-mail about a role playing community on Dantooine over a year ago, I'm sure I would have become bored with the game and left within a few months more, Star Wars or not I think.

I probably would not have played this game if he had not been for the Star Wars theme. I just can't help but enjoy playing as an Imperial. I don't quite understand why we love to hate these guys but its just plan enjoyable day to day. I guess it could be the Imperial pressense, the power, the look or the cool ships (ok thats my reason) but overall just stepping in the character of Captain Vixor D'zod is one of the most enjoyable things I can do.

I must confess that when I heard about SWG, it was my intention to play an imperial. I've told this to Tramel several times, and the idea of playing an imperial remains my biggest temptation to pick up a 2nd account.

I did roll an imp toon on another server and played them for about 4 hours total. It was cool.. even as a noob I started to feel the power. Something about wearing a uniform and having equiptment that does not look like a pile of junk makes me feel powerful.

The RP is so fun and easy I simply cannot believe that Gorath does not have a dedicated, military-style Imperial RP group. It's just so darn cool..

I mean, Imagine about a dozen people in Stormtrooper garb marching around, RP'ing. GAAAH! /drool.

People need to learn how to play star wars. :D

Im probably in agreement with many here. I had always been a fan of the movies, well after I was old enough to understand them. Initially I didn't have any interest in the game but that was just because I hadn't played any online games like EQ ever before so so i didn't think I would like SWG for that same reason, as if I suspected it would be like the way friends had described EQ or Planetside, where you just go around shooting and killing.

When my boyfriend got his copy, and i got to see a little bit of what it was like, it was then that the Star Wars setting started to look appealing to me because I could see that it wasn't just running around and shooting things. Just for the record in a very small way, my twi'lek Weyune was inspired by the twi'lek holding the gun, with the human male and wookiee that you see in the picuter on the Galaxies Installation disks^_^ I had know what what a twi'lek was but my only images of them up to that point had been in the movies, but just ones like Oola and Bib.

I also pose a question to all along the same lines. Would the game be as fun or possibly better or possibly worse if the era it took place in was the time around Phantom Mennace or maybe between Phantom and attack of the clones. I feel the content and almost every aspect of the game would be different, to be certain. What do you think?

I have always liked RP games although I'd only every really played MUD type games before (Gemstone III Specifically). As such I was use to paying a monthly fee and so that wouldn't have been a problem.

I also love Sci-Fi, and had this been Galaxies with the JTL space portion of the game I probably would have gotten it anyway, however Star Wars is my main hook in this game, it's what drew me to the game and what keeps me here. I could easily get tired of this game if it weren't for flying X-Wings against TIE fighters. And my wife HATES video games of all kinds, especially those online that require or could involve RP so if it weren't Star Wars I doubt she would suffer me playing it.

On a side note I agree with Novall and wish the would get more content driven by the developers in here. I just see so much potential for this game that has yet to be realized. I'm still pushing for them to allow factional imperial ships as space faction bases but required a factional mayor with a certain population to purchase from the recruiter. And then would allow for real space battles. I left the Empire to join the rebellion only because I think their pilot ships are far superior to those of the Empire, however the possibility to be on an Imperial Star Destroyer would most definately draw me back to the Dark Side.

P.S. as I've not been to Kessel yet, I don't suppose you can visit the cluster Daala was guarding with the Death Star prototype can you?

yeah, I played Ultima Online, but i allways said that there should be a starwars version of the game. That and I allways liked privateer, and said they should make one of those that was online and with all the new graphics. SWG did that, but at first I couldn't afford it. but now with the help of my IRL Brother, Glacial, I can play!!! I love SW's, and when i learned that I could play, and fly my own character in the sw Galaxy, I had to get it.

I'd have to say I think it would be much better at a later time period. I think the developers should have understood that most players would want to be rebels based on the movies and the whole "good guy" idea. So if this took place later in the time line such as heir to the empire or even after Thrawns death it would have made the balance make more sense.

Also this would allow for a more interesting story for Jedi since Luke would be starting to actively recruit them for his temple on Yavin. And this would allow for what I think to be more star warsy Jedi Missions sort of like Jabba's palace where you're performing missions for lower Jedi until you reach Luke or something.

The only downside to this is no Jabba, no Vader, and no Emperor. And while I really enjoyed working for Vader and the Emperor I think the majority of players could live without them for a better continuity and playing envoironment that might have been possible if this were later in the story line. This would allow for the additions of Kyp Durron (SP?), Lando, and possibly that new alien species I'm unfamiliar with. So that's just my opinion.

To Weyune's question about the Phantom Menace Timeline...

I don't find that timeline as compelling as the Pre-ESB timeline we are in now. If the game was set in that timeline, I am not sure if I would have played.

To me, Star Wars is Episodes IV and V (and some of VI). Strangely enough, there were no twileks in those movies, but they have since captured my imagination. I try to play up the differences between twileks and humans in my RP from time to time. I love the bald chick in the first Trek movie who refers to humans as a "sexually immature species". (I can't stay on topic to save my life.)

The period between ESB and RoTJ is probably the most action packed time they could have staged the game in. You see more masses battling it out in that period, more planets and entire systems involved instead of just a droid army vs clones. In ESB - RoTJ we see more mortality then in the more singular focuses of Anakin in ep 1- 4. In ESB and RoTJ we see fleets, more fighters, more races, more oppression, more force, more of Carrie Fisher's skin....we just see more of everyhing about the star wars universe.

I think the missed the most action-packed time in the GCW by one movie :(

I think you hit the nail on the head there. If this game had to be based in the time frame of the movies between ESB and RotJ would have been great. The war between the alliance and the empire would have made crime/smuggling common place and with a more interesting twist since it wasn't so much smuggling at the time because the Empire was just too occupied with the war to notice.

Plus you would have had more Yoda! I love that little green guy. Plus you could have Vader's new Super Star Destroyer and included the production of the second Death Star as well. And the balance between the Alliance and the Empire would have been more balanced. At this time the Alliance was finally starting to amass a navy of some size thanks mostly to Mon Calamari converting their luxery liners into Calamari Cruisers.

You'd also have the carbonite Solo in Jabba's palace, now that would be worth doing 40 missions to see. I'm dissapointed that in JTL one of the deep space sectors didn't include the Alderan (SP) system. Even if it was only rubble it would be great to fly out there and see nothing.

They picked the right timeline. Who's to say this game won't PROGRESS through ESB & ROTJ time periods?

Exactly! I think that was supposed to be the plan all along.
