R.I.P. Star Trek 1966-2005

Del'tar Chagas wrote:I have to disagree with you just a touch Novall. While the first season was pretty weak, I have to give some credit to the later season of Deep Space 9. I thought it was pretty good.
Right on the money, Delty. DS9 was weak with weak sauce when it started but during its later seasons it got brutal. They really shook things up and had some very good episodes. Too bad they didn't start sooner.

I have to apologize tramel, I did latch on to that phrase from him. It is just too good of a phrase to pass up though, isn't it?

Props to maddox on that one.

Yeah.. Trek needed to die. The spinoffs were getting worse and worse and the episodes were derivitives of other episodes, which were deriviatives of other episodes.. etc.

Regardless of the seriies you could rely on seeing the following each season:
- A character development episode focused each main character
- A space anomaly episode
- An alternate reality/temoral paradox episode
- 2 or 3 "main plot" episodes
- An "all is not quite a peaceful as it seems with these aliens" episode
- A "love" episode where someone or everyone wants to .. well, you know.

The only Trek serries I liked was TNG, one main reason was that watching it was one of the few things me and my dad ever did together. I remember watching it and durring the episodes we would talk about what was going on and what we thought would happen next.

Any who...As for the newer serries they all sucked DS9 never got my interest partially cause they never really went any where. Once they got the Defiance they went places but they where in the middle of a war that was less than interesting. Voyager just sucked, it had great potential but fell flat on its face. What a tall tell sign a Star Trek spin off is flowndering, the Borg show up. Come on is there no creativity left in the world. They couls have come up with some new bad ass threat but no lets throw the borg in there that will give us a 5 second spike in ratings.

Ok done with rant.

Try to think of it more as "lying fallow" than being dead. It's burned out. It had no real direction or sense of self anymore. It's been a dead hulk for years (ever since Voyager started, in my opinion).

So let it lay fallow for five years, and gather some decent writers, producers, directors, etc., and then maybe it will someday be as good as ST:TNG was when it first launched.

Del'tar Chagas wrote:My favorite episode was the one with Chiggy Von Richthoffen (sp?)? The alien ace who went around ruining people's shit? Until the old guy who couldn't fly smote him?

On a sidenote, the guy who played their old commander in that show...wasn't he in Band of Brothers? Can't recall his name in the show, but I think he was the guy who replaced Winters and then got really spacey and traumatized.
CHIGGY! Those two eps were EASILY the best eps of that one season of S:AAB. And it's not that the old man (commander) couldn't fly. It's that he *wouldn't* fly. He's the commander. It's his job to tell everyone else how and where to fly. He only took the pilot's seat (again, like old times) because nobody else had the pair or the skills to take down Chiggy.

My other favorite ep was "Pancakes," with the tough-as-nails fill-in commander who always said everything was as "easy as pancakes." The end of it still brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it.

DAMN I miss that show sometimes, but Galactica has been filling in nicely.

He's been in lots of stuff since S:AAB. He was in an X-Files (or Millenium, can't remember which), he's in a commercial right now. I see the S:AAB gang pop up here and there from time to time. Especially if Morgan and Wong are the writers on that show/ep.

Remember the Chineese guy? "Chicago"? He's now the forensics scientist on Law and Order: SVU.

Correct me if I am wrong, X'an. The "tanks" were originally designed so that they COULD not fly...something was implanted in them that intentionally threw off their equilibrium and made them get vertigo and stuff. Their commander had that thingy removed and went out to hunt The Red Chiggy RIGHT after having it removed, with no chance at victory...against doctor's orders I might add.

You've got to be wrong.

Keep in mind that a nipple-neck (tank) was one of the members of the team. I can't remember his name, but he had a role in a Morgan and Wong X-Files as a serial killer who tried to stuff Scully into a blast furnace in an apartment basement. He flew all the time. I think the Commander was just wounded or something, and maybe the medication kept him from flying?

This seems way too right, I gotta look it up. And the younger "tank" in their flight wing was very young as I recall.

I gotta clear this up.

Edited: Dammit. Couldn't find anything indicating what I was talking about. I suppose it most have been his own kinda Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. Seems to be a trait with all of this guys characters.

The only things I could find were just that he was trying to get his flight status re-instated. Nothing on the "why" of it. Maybe an old war injury that threw off his sense of space balance or something?

Yeah, that is what I was thinking. But I remember him being dizzy and disoriented when he was getting ready to go. And I remember the docs telling him not to because he wasn't "ready". Anywho, it was a bitching show. I also liked the episode where you learn about how that one woman's family was murdered by the androids.

I loved how the androids were totally bent on taking chances. Everything was a gamble to them. They literally made decisions based totally on random chance. Flipping a coin to see what door they would kick down and who's family they would shoot up.

AHA! Here is what I was talking about!

He has an old injury from combat that gave him an inner ear imbalance.

So, now you're trying to cover the fact that *I* said he had an old war injury, and you said it was because tanks can't fly because they're engineered that way?

Oh no, buddy, I'm not letting you off that easy.

Consider yourself TOTALLY NUTTY. ;P

You misunderstand X'an. I am not claiming a win here by any means. He did have a medical procedure. He did have a condition that prevented flying. My brain filled in the gaps (as brains are prone to do) when they lack information. My brain filled them in incorrectly. But, I didn't totally make that story up. That is where I was going, that's all.

But I coulda SWORN that the in-vitro's had all kinds of issues like that. Like not being able to reproduce and the like. Seemed to fit in there to me.
