Basically, what the author above is saying is that they hate us because we threten their cutlural identity.
It's why the want baseball out of the Olympics. Baseball and is an "american" passtime dispite the fact that it's widely played in Japan.
It's why they are sueing the Japanese governor because it is a slam against their cutlural identity.
Euro-Disney... american fast food chains....
I would say that hateing Americans has even become part of the cutlural identity so it is self-serving.
Why France can "suck it"

Morimoto is awesome too. Then again, I say this because I've eaten at his restaurant in Philly before, and let me tell you--going out for sushi and being able to see an Iron Chef making it is simply too cool for words.Sakai and chen are the reasons why i ever watch anything on food network is because they are both the bad asses of the food world.

Wow. I had no idea the French were this stupid. This takes their stupidity to a whole new level for me.Intellectuals like Sartre credited the Soviet Union with winning the Second World War and said that England and the United States invaded just to get in on the victory.
So, what, France surrendered just to give the Soviets something to do after the winter?
I think my favorite part about the whole Eisenhower (at least I'm pretty sure it was Eisenhower) TV movie thing they just made was the part where the French General first poo-poos the Operation Overlord plan, and then is forced to suck it up and write an apology letter when it works.

I suppose this would be the wrong time to say that stereotyping an entire country of people is probably wrong. Just like every other country has a stereotypical view of how Americans are. It is most likely that not every Frechman / woman is a cowardous, cheese eating, cigarette smoking, "pansies"; some for all we know may even be lactose intolerant, which would rule out the cheese part all together. But I'm sure its easier to just say "I hate the French" than to stop and realize any of that.
However, taking any sport out of the Olympics is a bit uncalled for, I suppose what I'm saying is hate what happened and how it was handled, but remember there are probably French citizens who think this matter was wrong too.

Yes, you're right. This is the wrong time.Kahuaria wrote:I suppose this would be the wrong time to say that stereotyping an entire country of people is probably wrong.
In fact, my mind is awash in a sea of memories from when all those French people spoke out and told us how much they loved America.
Oh, wait.

I understand your point but I have a hard time doing that in this case. I just remember the thousands of American's that died and were laid to rest in Normandy to free their country during WWII.Kahuaria wrote:I suppose this would be the wrong time to say that stereotyping an entire country of people is probably wrong. And anyone that attributes the winning of WWII to the soviets is gravely mistaken. It was our push from the east that forced Hitler to return his forces to Germany. The only reason the soviets were able to turn the tide of his invasion was because the German's were not prepared for the arctic tempratures of the winter.

No you are quite right. People are people and subject to form their own opinions BUT the author of the book I posted the review for is French. Even he, as a Frenchman, acknowledges that hating the United States is the predominated state of mind for the French people.Kahuaria wrote:I suppose this would be the wrong time to say that stereotyping an entire country of people is probably wrong. Is it right? No but you can't help but form opinions unless you live in a box. I try to give everyone the opportunity to alter my preconceived opinions about them. They just have to be willing to alter their preconceived opinions of me. If they are unwilling, then they are a waste of my time.
But's that's me.

Its easy to discourage stereotyping when you speak of groups within our own nation who are so diverse and unique among all the different cultures, environments, and communities.
But then you go an entire country that seems to hate you because you're American. It isn't speculation, it happens. They hate us.
When your country considers someone their top intellectual and then we hear them say the British and Americans did NOT help win the war we left to wonder.
When something as cherished as the Olympics is torn apart because of a country's dislike for another we have to wonder.
Now go tell the grandchildren and great grandchildren of the veterans of World War II that their grandparents fought and died but didn't make any other difference then the persuit of glory.
If you're French and don't hate Americans then we're not talking about you. We're talking about the general mentality of an entire nation. Also you're probably Canadian.

One of the rules I was subject to when going on a function outside of the US was to not wear any American symbols, yes i know that most other countires openly hate us, but my point it that by turning around and doing the same thing they do makes you no better, therefore i try to keep an open mind.Seret Sajet wrote:But then you go an entire country that seems to hate you because you're American. And I may have misread that but I'm not Canadian I was born and raised in the United States.

I like to think of stereotypes as "shortcuts".
I am kidding. Kahuria is right, it is unfair to label an entire nation based on the actions of one. But when day after day, year after year, you see the same behavior from millions of people...at what point do you say, "Hmmm...maybe this isn't really a stereotype? Maybe it's a fact?"
I am not encouraging others to "hate" French people...just voicing my opinion based on facts presented to me about the people making news from their country.

I'll give ya that. I'm not sure what you mean by your second sentence though. The Canadian part was a little bit of humor since they generally don't hate us. Again, I speak of a general mentality not just a few individuals.
