Its another money pit! they have already developed their next ten system releases for the next 20 years. They just make them marginally better each time so people just HAVE to have the latest. * shrug * with the prices, X-box was my last gaming system purchase. At least until the kid is old enough to cry about wanting one.

Neither.
Someone give me a compelling reason to buy either one of them at launch.

Honestly, I'm not buying anything at launch. Hell I had the original playstation until I got PS 2 last year. I will likely always do more gaming on my computer, but I do enjoy having some kind of supplemental gaming system. But I don't need it when it comes out. Console gaming is a different experince than pc gaming, and I do enjoy it. So I will probably wait until the obligatory price breaks start kicking in and then consider my options again.
And I find it odd that certain individuals (who shall remain nameless) that work for video game companies don't encourage people to buy either system, Mr. Rantypants.
Mabye I am just a noob, but when Nvidia says straight up that the GPU in the PS3 is better than 2 Geforce 6800 ultras running in SLI (a setup that only comes in high grade, high COST rigs), me thinks that computer gaming might be taking a hit soon. At least until the technoogy comes down in price for us po' folk.

Oh, and please try to keep posts on topic. The subject is "which one should
I buy." Not "who can convince X'an that he should buy either."
It's all about me. And I will thank you to keep it that way, good sir. Or I won't buy your DVD.

Well, I'd look at it this way...
PS3: If they do backwards compatibility with it on PS1 and PS2 games; Your going to have a lot of games to pick from. Not sure what the PlayStation online thing is like though; if they have one?
Xbox360: The new kids (Well, old, it is Microsoft afterall) on the block with a building fanbase and budding game ventures. Online play I hear is great for Xbox Live. If they do backwards compatibility with the original Xbox.... I honestly think the 360 will be the way to go.
But then... I like that the Xbox is more or less my computer away from the Net.
Almost forgot.... I've always liked the Xbox mods over the PS mods too.

People play games other than MMO's?
What kind of crack are you people on?

Kill Switch, Kiva. That is some good crack! I'd like to see a sequel to it as well.
Let's see... There's also a bunch of Star Wars related games where even you would enjoy melting some faces with: Kotor 1 and 2, SW: Battlefront, Republic Commando...
All titles available on your Xbox (And some on PS2)

Back on topic, please. Yeah I know its ironic, but lets keep this one on topic because I know the author is really looking for your actual opinions still.

One last thing on the two consoles then I'll leave my nudging aside, Krussh.
The controllers. I know it sounds silly; but if a system has a crappy controller I usually won't touch it.
The bonus to getting Xbox (if they keep the same design concept) is that I think the color coded buttons and, while bulky, the controller is easier on the hands makes gameplay much easier in my honest opinion. The smaller PS controller usually leaves my hands with cramps after a good hour or two play period. Just something to consider I think.
Though her comment was a bit off topic (Ekade)... I think the ability to play Online games with both consoles is something to consider as well. I'd check and see what titles will be available for online play with both systems in addition to other titles available and the functionality of the console itself.
Great titles, online play, easy on the hands controller; These are all reasons I'd lean toward Xbox360.

Probably because Mr. Rantypants isn't going to be buying one at launch, either (my game isn't a launch title). I'd just wait and see what games are out for each system, and then decide based on what games you'd rather be playing.

Don't believe the hype (sing it). EVERY video the Sony showed at E3 for the PS3 was pre-rendered FMV, and not actual gameplay as they claimed. Anyone remember the Yuna video from FFX? The one Sony said was "actual gameplay?" Or maybe the claim that "the PS2 games will look just like A Bug's Life."
Right now the word is that the PS3 is VERY hard to program for, and I think that's due in large part to the problem that the tech isn't even fully locked down yet, I think.
Bottom line: It's 6 months between the 360 and the PS3. If you think there's games you've got to have for the 360 at launch, buy it, and then start saving your pennies again for the PS3.

Ah.
I had read that skeptics weren't quite sure how much of PS3's E3 footage was actual game play, but I had to hear it from the horse's ass...er...mouth...as it were.
As for the online play, I leave that to the ol' PC. Sony has only mentioned it in passing, but nothing in depth. As for M$...as I read it, the Xbox live Silver account you get with the 360 just lets you network and chat with friends online and pay to download extra content. You need the Gold account to play, and that costs you moolah. Plus, I hated Halo and I'll be damned if I have to pay extra to have somebody with too much time on their hands stomp on my gargantuan nads.
I know the upgradeablity of a PC is going to keep it in my good gaming graces in the long haul, as I am sure that the cost of the GPU tech is going to come down over time.
On a side note, has anyone heard anything about a company called Infinium making a system called the Phantom? I noticed some refs to it in a forum I came across while looking for info on the 2 systems. Most people seem to think of it as a joke. I have never even heard of it.

PS 3, better hardware.

Yeah, unless someone has a copy of the Gates fortune I don't see anyone successfully breaking into the gaming system market. At least not for consoles. Portables might have a chance. I am kind of surprised apple never designed a portable game system. But they have never been huge on gaming.

Penny Arcade pretty much took the Phantom out behind the woodshed, beat on it, and then threw it in front of the gaming community to expose it as a complete farce.

While that certainly seems true based on the arbitrary numbers being thrown out by both MS and Sony, I can't hang my hat on it.
It's pretty much universally agreed that the Xbox had it ALL over the PS 2 in the hardware department, but the PS 2 continued to kick ass in game sales (where I think the console companies make most of their money). DESPITE the "inferior" technology. This time around, it would appear the tables have turned. If in fact the PS 3 is technically superior and they can program for it properly AND they can pull in the third party game support that they have been known for, it would make sense that they could stomp on the Xbox from the minute it comes out.
