I like in the Specials on Episode 1, in the unnarrated, super long documentary starting from GL sitting to write the script. Near the end, as the finals for digital shots begin rolling in, you can see his distaste for Jar-Jar too. Essentially, the guys at ILM got so giddy with having a digital character, that they overdid it (as everyone here already knows) and by the time GL got the final look at it, it was really too late for him to make sweeping changes. That at least restored some of the man's credibility to me.
George Lucas set out with a few goals in this prequel series. Besides money and storytelling, he wanted the to have a monumental impact on Hollywood with CGI advancements, similar to how the original Star Wars had a huge impact on SFX in it's original run. I believe this came at the expense of the story (although GL hasn't ever really been king of dialogue). As Jabe said, sometimes less is more, but GL had it out to show everything. The only reason he didn't do that in 1977 was because he couldn't.
While I think the prequel trilogy suffered because of it, Hollywood benefitted from Lucas' attempt to jumpstart full use of CGI and integrating it into many scenes. Spider-Man, LOTR, The Matrix Sequels are some of the more headline cases (there are dozens upon dozens more), and they were all able to incorporate CGI and digital actors by his desire to push the envelope with CGI.
I can't believe no one has brought this up...EP 3 DVD
Had it saterday thanks to Amazon mailing too soon. But I have had ep3 since after a week it had been out.

Dont you think your age difference plays on that a little bit as well, I mean personally watching a movie at 7 and watching a movie at 34, you are going to have a different look on the world and life. I always love the people that compare the movies like that. Consider the difference in your self and your outlook on reality and take that into play when you compare the original with the new, myself personally, I still have the mentality of a 7 year old (ask my wife)

Also on the topic of New Star Wars stuff, anyone heard the rumor of a possible movie that takes place when yoda was young? Say one thing about it, but haven't heard anything since.

That was a mis-quote. Somebody had asked George Lucas if he were to make another film, would he base it before or after the set of films. He responded by saying first and foremost, there are no more movies. He then went on to say he'd like to tell Yoda's story, as it involves him stopping what was believed to be the last active Sith Lord and how Yoda became a Jedi Master.Dew wrote:Jabe Adaks wrote:I thought the original movies were better because of what was potentially left out. And Episode III has easily become my favorite.

That would mean like 4 people looked at it this month. I think they allow about 300k per month. Lowercase k was intentional.

Bit late to reply to this thread I guess but I did finally get it last night while waiting on Galaxies to update still.
What I loved the most... The commentary by Lucas about the Prophecy of 'The Chosen One'.
I have to agree with Lucas that the perception of Darth Vader probably was skewed because of the first three films now (E4-6). An icon of Evil instead of a character bent by turmoil and seduction. That's probably why some people do get little out of the current films. It's because we know what happens in Episodes 4-6 and have pre-set thoughts about the characters in Episodes 1-3. That may have diluted some of the feeling that there was a Lot of character development going on.
My biggest problem with the overwhelming use of CGI is only in that there is so little 'epic' battles in Episodes 4-6 (in comparison) it makes me look at Episodes 1-3 and keep going, "George, if your sticking with this... you need to do some New Generated Enhancements to the Battles in 4-6 to even out where all the technology went over that 30 year gap between E3-E4."
The reality is that it's a matter of Real Life technology when the two trilogies were made. The affect of the movies though make me think that Old Republic Technology was more advanced than The Galactic Empire Technology. It does leave me having to really stretch my imagination given how clean E1-3 are in comparison to E4-6.
Overall... Love it. The Circle is now complete.... till I have to buy replacement DvDs.
