Alright. The process of multitracking was not first used by Marvin Gaye. But the difference used in style and technique is relevent. It broke new ground far beyond what his peers were doing and many of the artists mentioned here in contrast gave him credit for it.

Before Marvin, no solo artist did voice recording with 2,3,4 different backups of themselves. And all with different tones and lyrics. Listen to the single What's Going On?. Before that song nothing else sounded like it vocally.

But after it? Lots of folks took a trick from his bag.
