Its not dead really. UPN made an announcement with Bermin that the franchise isn't over. They've got other plans to continue it; but lets face it, its time that Trek was given a break so they can figure out where it needs to go. The fans will keep it alive, of course. As they've done since the first wave of fans rode in.

I think thats a problem with anything anymore. The franchises scramble for money makers (that is the point afterall) then fumble on the plots when they begin to lose a sense of themselves. Lucas did with Star Wars and Trek did it with too many spin offs. Having a gap between the series is what helped Next Gen compared to the original really if you think about it.
