Well, it wasn't practically nothing...
The whole point was that they got dumped on a planet where both of them could create primative weapons from their species' pasts. He used a log, some sulfur, probably some saltpeter...not really nothing.
Although Skor did get pwned by a jr high chem lab.

Oooo, another good point,.... even though it was technically burgandy... it was Kirk's crew that more or less made and broke the rule about getting killed because you wore red in the 80's Trek movies!

It's obvious that the idea of Twi'lek slaves is a shameless ripoff of the Orion Slave Girl concept.
