The whole reason they got away with that last time was because they owned the "Installed Base." I.E. they had (have) WAY more PS2s out in the marketplace than there are Xboxes, so they can go to 3rd party companies and offer a small incentive to say "Hey, wait a year before you release this on the Xbox" and it's not really hurting the 3rd party folks in the pocketbook because the money ponied up by Sony makes up for the money they'd have made on the Xbox.Krusshyk wrote:It's pretty much universally agreed that the Xbox had it ALL over the PS 2 in the hardware department, but the PS 2 continued to kick ass in game sales (where I think the console companies make most of their money). DESPITE the "inferior" technology. This time around, it would appear the tables have turned. If in fact the PS 3 is technically superior and they can program for it properly AND they can pull in the third party game support that they have been known for, it would make sense that they could stomp on the Xbox from the minute it comes out.
This time around, they aren't going to have the numbers. They've still got the "word of mouth" marketing they had going for them when PSX turned into PS2s, but Microsoft has a bigger market presence this time around.
Microsoft will be out first, and they hope to have about 6 million units shipped in (that's not purchased) by the time PS3 is really hitting its stride.
But, it's really a waiting game. I don't see either company wowing me with any really innovative titles yet.
