Over-generalizing points is a poor argument method. There are very valid points, which most of us have explained clearly, and may have later summed up into only a single sentance.Isleh wrote:I just reopened my WoW account. Shall I make a comparrison to some of the complaints I've heard about the NGE?
Upon first loading in the game...
I was unfamiliar with the controls. I couldn't figure out how to change the camera angle and I was stuck in a behind the character view. I could not just type in chat, I had to hit enter first. Obviously, this game sucks.
When attacking, sometimes my specials wouldn't work. Obviously, this game sucks.
When I logged in, all the talents I had learned previously were gone. I had to reallocate all my points. Obviously, this game sucks.

None of it is accurate once a little effort is made to understand the game and the same holds true for SWG yet post after post this is exactly what I had to read. But running from the nOOb lands to the city, I couldn't help but wish that I could run faster or at least use a mount and not have to wait until I was 40th level. Just like I could do in SWG.
Wonder when WoW will let you have your own multiplayer ships and let you stage battles at sea?
But what does it matter and what do I know? The NGE sucks and everyone just wants to teach big, bad 'ol SOE a lesson. You can pat yourselves on the back when the servers are shut down.
Case in point, the chat controls....when I left the NGE, there was NO option to change to non-modless chat (no enter or "/" first). CoV and WoW and nearly all have modless chat, which is fine, as they have ALWAYS had that as a default. For SWG, the default was non-modless from launch, and while they did offer a modless option, the classic was always non-modless. With the NGE, it didn't just reset the default, it completely removed the option to use a more classic SWG setup. For a game that was over two years old, that is unacceptable. Is it clear how it differs from the controls in WoW? Yes they are different from the SWG controls and take time to adjust, but you should not need time to adjust to the most basic parts of the same game (ie chat).

She is drawing an analogy between learning the UI between the 2 games mentioned. If you could pick up a completely new game's UI with no trouble thats great, but that being said figuring out a modified version of a UI you were previously familiar with should not be that hard.DuoXDuoX wrote:I started wow from scratch and had no problem with the controls etc. so i dont get what you are saying.

Eevery mmorg bleeds members except those fresh out of the box or the current king of the hill. I have played the game since launch and as a non jedi it was pretty obvious to me after the village open I "lost" a lot more in game acquaintances to the jedi grind then I did quitting, that was until the NGE.Jabe Adaks wrote:Jedi were still the far minority. I don't "cheerlead" for the NGE, I hate whats happened to the game, made it as "streamlined" and generic as Warcraft as they both boast 9 classes I believe (not counting pilots) and near the same amount of racial options. I do however think trying to maintain a positive attitude is generally a good thing. I am happy to see any real negative press Lucas and Sony get for their handling of the NGE as they deserve it. I don't think the people still playing the game here are doing it to spite the people either not playing, or play grudgingly so, they are simply trying to make the best of a bad situation.
SWG has always been more about the people I know in game then a rules set and user interface. I played Ultima Online for 5+ years, thru the Trammel/Felucca split, ROT. necromancers, etc and it was the people I knew there I held onto more then OSI dazzling dev work. Since it seems like this type of thread usually ends up getting locked, I suggest cutting to the chase and doing it now before anyone says anything they want to remove later. Sony and Lucas Arts have done enough to the community, no sense helping them out by engaging in SWG player on SWG player bashing.

Id say its more group pity. And a damn game ? Spending 2 years of my life playing with the same group of people and meeting tons of new people along the way meant a hell of a lot to me. I made friends across the board that i considered real friends and that considered me a real friend. The fact that 9/10 of thos friends are now spread across 3 or 4 mmo's makes life really miserable. It's like high school all over again. Everyone graduating an leaving, people you thought would be friends forever now slowly begin losing touch every day. All because of a combat system change that caused mistrust enough to make them all leave. I could probablly put up with the system even though it isn't good. But why would i give them money for causing 90% of my friends to leave to several other games. I'll never have one place to go where all my good friends are in a game again. Yeah i still got my real life parties and friends to hang out with but i really enjoyed my time with all my friends in galaxies and it breaks my heart knowing i may never play another game with people that cared about as much as my rl friends. So if its just a game then fine to me it wasnt. The gameplay was just a game. The friends lost because of that gameplay change is more than a game it effects mine and thousands upon thousands of others that feel the exact same way.

To Jabe:
So ... are you that compassionate towards other people who 'suffer' in real life as well?
To anyone:
This is a game. You all pay for a service which SOE provides, and nothing more. SOE is the owner and can do with it what they damn want to. Even change the UI after 2 years. It is their call. If they loose subscriptions over it it is PURELY their problem also.
And yes, anyone who has a problem with NGE or SWG or SOE should leave and stop wasting his life even commenting on it. Since this is the only sane thing you can do. You all just pay for a service, you have no rights other than use that service. All complaints, even the ones (that are far more justified comparing to others) considering the disabeled people, are invalid. SWG was never in any way bound to provde playability to disabeled persons. Nor did they assure anyone of you the value of items in game will be constant over a period of time. Or that you will still have fun playing after a year. Or that your friends will still be around. Thinking they owe you anything, especially the points mentioned above, is moronic. Other things that fall into moronic classification are
- paying for more than 1 month ahead
- considering in-game items and other bits of data stored on some hard disk as a real life "wealth"
- evaluating in-game things in real life
- persistance in something you don't like
- losing time arguing about things you cannot change and in fact have no real meaning IRL
Basically anyone who grievs over an in game feature, (lost) item, lost perspective or value, should have his head checked and try to detach himself from imaginery life and stuff more. Paying for 1/2 a year ahead and then bitch you got screwed (you are paying for a service not a finished product) - I say "that person irrational thinking and passinate rushing into things is screwing him".
You don't like it? Who gives a crap! So I like it? Who gives a crap anyway. We are all in a take-it-or-leave-it realtionship to game producers.

In fact I could make the same argument you just made about SWG chat concerning my WoW talents and the time I spent picking the ones that had fit my playstyle.

But I'm NGE cheerleading again so I'll stop after one more point. DD, you are still here posting and talking to your friends. The NGE didn't change that and can't change that unless you let it. Now if you want to make a point about how much you hate the NGE by severing your ties with the community? That all you and not the NGE.
I wish I didn't have to run half way across a the damn world to learn a flight point and a flight points limited to only certain cities. I wonder when WoW is going to let me have my own hypogriff so I can go to any city I want?

You miss the delicate fact that it is still the SAME game by name, subscription and all other important aspects. When the CU hit Test Center, it had modless as the default, but it still allowed for the classic controls.Isleh wrote:

In fact I could make the same argument you just made about SWG chat concerning my WoW talents and the time I spent picking the ones that had fit my playstyle.
Also, there is no reason that a non-modless option could be offered. In fact, if I read the boards correctly, it was an option for 2-3 days after the NGE until it was removed in one of the hotfixes. It doesn't affect the gameplay for those that don't used WASD to move.
Aside from the controls, my point is that it is not a new game, they are still calling it Star Wars Galaxies last I heard. Comparing your new experience in another game to sweeping changes within the same game does not hold any merit. I could understand combat changes, for we had those already. However, it was within the same realm, and they made the effort to cater to existing customers when they did it. Regardless, the NGE is here to stay, for however long that may be, so it does not matter. I just dislike the generalizations of those of us with our gripes and when a bad argument hit me in the face, I needed to jump in.
FYI It's New Gaming Enhancements, which I consider to be pretty different than New Game.

I've more or less adapted to the NGE and the last few patches have been life savers imo. Does that mean I don't miss the old system? Does that mean I don't miss all the people that felt betrayed and left? Does it make me feel any less like someone who pined away for a big promotion, finally got it, then had the company bought out and was offered the option of working the mailroom or leaving? No.
As I said, I have adapted and accepted my losses, but that doesn't make me insensitive to those that still feel a sense of personal loss. Any MMO is (hopefully) a long term investment of time, money, and persona. Any cataclysmic event that devalues any of that is not going to be taken well by everyone.
Yes technically any MMO you play can change and does to some degree over time - most have. No other MMO has had as many drastic changes implemtented as shoddily as SOE with SWG. EQ one and two were/are awesome MMO's in their own right so SOE CAN make a great game - they just really dropped the ball with this one from the beginning and haven't dealt with implementational impact on their consumer base very well. So I'm fairly sure the flack they are getting from this isn't unexpected. They are playing roulette and have bet everything on one number. Now they will just have to see where the ball drops.
As for patting ourselves on the back when the servers go down - well that's a bit melodramatic, but honestly I wouldn't care very much if the servers were shutdown tomorrow. I've learned not to become attached and since most of the great people I used to play with are gone it really wouldn't be a huge loss. Afterall gameplay doesn't matter and we can RP anywhere right?

This is one of the best features of WOW in my opinion. Discovering new parts of the world and having it unfold in front of you. WOW rewards you for taking your time, not just hopping on some speeder and seeing everything. WOW encourages exploration. So what if you have to run to flight points? You get to see all of the beautiful scenary on the way. You can go to cities for the other faction, but remember that each side is at war with each other.Isleh wrote:I wish I didn't have to run half way across a the damn world to learn a flight point and a flight points limited to only certain cities. The factions(Empire/Alliance) are suppose to be at war in SWG as well but somehow that is forgotten. Now granted in recent history, the game has made great strides with PVE and GCW. However, it's not very realistic that a rebel should be able to just waltz into Bestine.
