Serious Gut Check Question

MrDooo wrote:They picked the right timeline. Who's to say this game won't PROGRESS through ESB & ROTJ time periods?
Exactly! I think that was supposed to be the plan all along.
Although, I agree that may have been a considered option by the devs, I bet they shut it down early. Imagine the amount of time they'd have to put in to remove all of the NPC's conversations that must take place between ANH and ESB. Theme parks would have to be reworked. Important NPCs would need redesigning...which would likely involve a long approval process from LucasArts. Lastly, the closer SWG is to ANH, the less continuity they must sort through. How much do we know about the time between ANH and ESB compared to the rest (not counting SWG, here)?

If this idea was even considered feasible by the devs, we can all be fairly certain that they're as likely to fix the broken dances and other promises they've made as progress us along the timeline...

The only online game I played before this one was America's Army. To be completely honest, if this wasn't star wars I would have never picked it up. America's Army is a free game and the online experience was free also. Star Wars was the big winner as I have not played AA much since I picked up galaxies.

Yes, I've noticed that people with solo tendencies don't last too long in a game like this.

On the subject of the timeline...

If you were to ask me which timeline a SWGMMO should be placed in, I would have said during the Empire Strikes Back. This should have done quite a few things.

It should have kept all of the jedi fanboys in check by not supplying them and giving them free reign over everything (like Old Republic or New Republic would have).

It should have balanced the "good guy" factor by making things increasingly more difficult for the rebels.

It could have made the game from an Imperial point of view, going contrary to almost everything people have been engrained with and make the Empire the "right" thing.

It would have given a diffinative basis for technology and continuity.

It still should have been able to supply major Star Wars Characters that people would be familiar with.

In hindsight however, I am now one of the ones who believe that this game should have been made for a post-ROTJ pre-New Republic timeline. We can all see that the reason they placed it in this time was so they could cash in on certain characters being around, but they might has well made them no name characters for all that they have done. The quests are jokes and once you do the Theme Parks, you'll more than likely never see them again. The Devs basically handed out jedi, further defiling the timeline. The Empire is virtually non-existant (although, if the game was set post-ROTJ, I would still play an Imperial officer, just on an outlining planet).

As far as timeline progression goes, I know for a fact this game timeline won't progress. By doing that, the devs will be admitting that they made a mistake with everything they've done since launch. The only reason to progress the storyline time is to try to fix the continuity. Not only that, they will be opening themselves up to how they did nothing with the main characters that they were given. They lose if they do that, and they lose big. Not only that, but what would it do for the game? If this was moved to a post ISB time line, what changes would you see?

If they progressed the timeline...how would they kill off all the jedi player characters (you know, the ones that shouldn't exist anyway...lol)?

If the game had an Imperial feel and all of the bonuses were swayed in that direction, my money would still be on a larger Rebel population...if not larger than it is now. People tend toward the under dog, and the more under-dogish, the better. Some would go for the challenge, and others for the obvious sense of right and wrong. :)

I had a really bad experience with Acheron's Call, and had no intention of getting hooked on EverCrack like some of my friends. Then one of them said they were accepting applications to beta test SWG. I skimmed the dev boards (as they were then known) and decided to sign up. I got in on beta 2, shuttle 2, when they first added buildings (and you could go into the houses in NPC cities). Of course, what we have is not what Holocron designed, but what I have instead is a huge investment in Tasno, and all his friends, acquaintances, and Iago.

Oddly, playing the game has made me a much bigger fan of the movies.

LOL.. I played Asheron's Call for about 4 months. It sucked. I think I spent all of 15 minutes RP'ing the whole time I was there.

When the game was in beta, it was stated by the Dev's that this is it as far as timeline goes. There isnt going to be any ESB or RoTJ (even if things lasted that long) becasue it was never planned to take the timeline out of its current context.

Personally, I always said and thought that was a horrid idea. Right now, the empire should be at its zenith. Everyone not imperial should be really beat down IMO. Then ESB expansion comes along....the GCW becomes balanced. Rebs and Imps are fairly balanced at this point with weapons/technology. RoTJ though should put the rebellion at its full potency with better weapons/equipment ect. had they phased each cycle in like this, then you'd see a much more interesting game.

I agree, The game I played in Beta is not the game I play today, and I dont mean that in a positive way.

Exactly. And they could have phased the changes over a very long period of time. 2, 3 or even more years between phases. Kept the players hooked for maybe 6-8+ years. About then, new technology will call for the creation of SWG2.

I think UO and EQ have led the way for positive and ground-breaking expansions. Every expansion I was privy to in UO made the game better then the initial release (except for Trammel).
